Kindle Unlimited is something I believe avid readers need. I find myself reading books that I would not pick up otherwise and delving into genres that I do not usually read. In my previous Kindle Unlimited post, I included a mystery book, which trust me when I say I would not have read anything from the genre previous to this subscription.
If I am sounding like a fangirl for Kindle Unlimted, its because I am. Although I will admit I don’t think I have ever paid the full price subscription as I like to wait for the deals that come around every few months. This time I got three months free with O2 priority which I am more than happy about. However, with that being said none of the books on this list are recent reads for me as I have been using the last month and a half to finish series that I have talked about recently.
Witching On A Star (Academy of Witches #1) by Erin Bedford
It would not be a post about Kindle Unlimted books without at least one academy series. This seems to be the favourite trope of Kindle Unlimited authors and honestly, I don’t mind it.
I do need to add a warning that this series does get very hot and heavy around book three and it is most definitely a reverse harem, just in case that is not your thing. I had no idea that was where this series was going and it was definitely a shock when things started to get quite graphic. I would probably place this series in an upper YA category that bleeds into new adult slightly.
With that being said this series is still an enjoyable read and definitely has its moments of humour, one being mean girl witch called Sabrina a cliche that is not understood by anyone but human raised Max.
Goodreads synopsis: “All her life Max knew she was destined for more, but when she graduated high school, she never expected to find out she was a witch.
Now Max isn’t headed to the ivy league college of her dreams but to the Witch’s Academy, where the spells are real and the classes just might kill you.
If Max hopes to survive her new destiny she’ll have to put up with mean girl cliques, way too sexy for their own good bad boys, and a popularity contest she didn’t expect to win.
Turns out, wishing comes with consequences and all magic has a price, especially at Witch Academy, but Max may find she’s more prepared than she thought to handle it all.”
Two Princes of Summer (Whims of Fae #1) by Nissa Leder
I have to make it aware straight away that this series is one that started off really strong for me, but it started to lose my interest around the fourth and fifth books. I am yet to finish the entire series, with just one book left, so who knows maybe it will be a saving grace and will restore my faith in the series.
This book was suggested to me on one of the many book groups I am in on Facebook and I must say the cover is definitely what sold me on it. We all know I’m a sucker for a good cover.
If you are a fan of fae books then you will love this series. It has the seasonal courts alongside the Seelie and Unseelie. An almost love triangle and a sequel series set in the same world but with witches, so if you can’t get enough of this universe there are plenty of books to fill that need.
Goodreads synopsis: “Two fae princes fighting for the Summer crown.
A mortal lured into Faerie and caught in their web.
The battle that changes everything.
After her mother’s suicide, Scarlett’s grief consumes her. When a beautiful, otherworldly stranger offers her a release from her pain, it’s too tempting an opportunity to resist. She’s lured into Faerie and sucked into a royal battle as two fae brothers prepare for the Battle of Heirs where the winner earns the right to the throne.
Human emotion fuels fae power and Scarlett’s is the most potent Cade has ever tasted. He’s certain she is the key to defeating his brother Raith. But Raith has surprises of his own, and Scarlett fits perfectly into his devious plan.
Scarlett must decide how far she’s willing to go to avoid her guilt and heartache. As she is pulled further into the realm of magic and power, she discovers a dangerous secret that could change her fate forever.
Will Scarlett find a way to cope with her sorrow and untangle herself from the two princes?
Or will they devour her completely?”
The Paper Magician (The Paper Magician #1) by Charlie N. Holmberg
I have to confess that I did not read this on my kindle as I actually own the physical book, however, I will be continuing the series on Kindle Unlimited as I liked it but not enough to buy the rest of the series in physical copies.
I LOVE the magic in this book. I like how you get to choose which affinity you study and how something as boring as paper can be made into something wonderful. The best part of this being a living paper dog.
I honestly had no idea what this book was about going into it. However, I will say I was pleasantly surprised.
Goodreads synopsis: “Ceony Twill arrives at the cottage of Magician Emery Thane with a broken heart. Having graduated at the top of her class from the Tagis Praff School for the Magically Inclined, Ceony is assigned an apprenticeship in paper magic despite her dreams of bespelling metal. And once she’s bonded to paper, that will be her only magic…forever.
Yet the spells Ceony learns under the strange yet kind Thane turn out to be more marvellous than she could have ever imagined—animating paper creatures, bringing stories to life via ghostly images, even reading fortunes. But as she discovers these wonders, Ceony also learns of the extraordinary dangers of forbidden magic.
An Excisioner—a practitioner of dark, flesh magic—invades the cottage and rips Thane’s heart from his chest. To save her teacher’s life, Ceony must face the evil magician and embark on an unbelievable adventure that will take her into the chambers of Thane’s still-beating heart—and reveal the very soul of the man.
From the imaginative mind of debut author Charlie N. Holmberg, The Paper Magician is an extraordinary adventure both dark and whimsical that will delight readers of all ages.”
Night Shifter (Magical Creatures Academy #1) by Lucia Ashta
Like with most Kindle Unlimted books the cover is what drew me into this one, which is quite impressive when you realise that I use a paperwhite so everything is in black and white.
Again this series probably sits somewhere around the upper YA category. I cannot remember clearly if there was any sexual content, however, it is definitely a topic that comes up from time to time.
If you love shifter romances or anything to do with shifters then you will love this series. Its not your typically shifter story, which usually focuses on werewolves, it involves an array of creatures one of which is a tree. Which does sound ridiculous because it is. You can also get your fill of vampires and fae.
This series is a great place to start if you are looking for a quick read. I read the first book in one day and I’m pretty sure the rest are also quick, but often suspenseful reads.
Goodreads synopsis: “Rina Nelle Mont has never been a part of the paranormal world. Until now.
Well, maybe not. The Magical Creatures Academy only accepts supernaturals, and she’s been invited to the school, but she has none of the powers she’s supposed to. Blip. Nada. Not even a spark.
The school hasn’t made a mistake in a century, but she might be the first one. That’s just the kind of thing that would happen to her. Especially since no one has any idea what kind of creature she’ll be … assuming her powers ever decide to make an appearance.
The Academy is the leading institution for paranormal creatures in the world. Its students are the finest of shifters, vampires, and fae.
Speaking of fine fae … Leander Verion, prince of the elves, is off-limits. Not only is he arrogant, stubborn, and totally not her style, he’s her brother’s best friend. She will not fall for him. No way. Besides, he’s not interested … is he?
When two men who head the Shifter Alliance, a rebel faction of shapeshifters who seek to escape the control of the Enforcers—the supernatural police force—find out about Rina and her potential for a different kind of magic, they hunt her. For them, the stakes are as personal as they get.
Whether she’s ready or not, Rina is about to find out what she’s made of…”
