A pretty cover is something that I have always been drawn to and I wholeheartedly believe that you won’t find a single book lover that wouldn’t agree. However, I have noticed over the years that I do judge books based on their covers.
This issue got a lot worse when I brought a Kindle as when looking on the Kindle store I never read the synopsis of a book unless it has a nice cover, this being because of the time it can often take to navigate the (quite slow) Kindle store. Now I know that makes me sound shallow (and lazy) which is 100% correct, but I can’t help it.
As humans, we are naturally more drawn to things that we find aesthetically pleasing and if I see a book has a bad cover I am going to think that it’s a bad book. There’s something in me that thinks this because if little to no effort was put into the cover, I’m going to think the same for the book. This is obviously an extremely bad mentality to have as I may be missing out on some really great reads, but I just can’t get over it. Obviously, I am aware this isn’t always the case and it’s quite ignorant for me to think this way, but hey I’m only human and I like pretty things.
Bad covers are something that I find I don’t mind so much in a digital format. This mostly being because you never really see the cover when reading on a Kindle so I have no reason to care. Although I will say that I’ve never wanted to pay for a book with a bad cover and will most likely only read one if it is on Kindle Unlimited. Please tell me I’m not the only one.
When it comes to the physical books that I own I want them to be pretty. If they come with a pretty spine that’s even better. As someone who was a semi-popular bookstargammer (before I stopped posting) I needed pretty books because no one will care about an ugly book on a platform which you get judged by visuals alone.
I think everyone will admit that they have brought a book based purely on its cover and also that they have formed an opinion on a book purely on its cover. It can’t just be me, right?
My love for pretty covers has betrayed me a couple of times as there have been a few instances where I didn’t like the book as much as the cover. I’m looking at you Sea Witch. But it hasn’t happened enough times for me to learn my lesson just yet. Honestly, I don’t think I ever will.
Pretty books will always be my weakness and I’m not ashamed to say that I do judge books by their cover. This is probably something that I should work on and get over because it’s pretty shallow, but I don’t think I will.

I’m guilty of this too!
Preach!
I’m equally bad at this, but the most embarrassing part is that I arrange my monthly reading lists based on what covers look nice next to each other 🧍
That sounds like something I would do! To be honest I wouldn’t be surprised if I was already doing this subconsciously
