Book Review: Ruthless Fae by Caroline Peckham and Susanne Valenti

Synopsis:

They tried to break us.

They almost did.

But we’re not going anywhere.

The Celestial Heirs think the stars are on their side. But they don’t know what’s coming. Fighting them one on one isn’t an option so we have to be stealthy. Remaining under the radar won’t be easy, but if we pull it off, they’ll never suspect our involvement when their lives start falling apart.

Besides, they’ve already taken us to the brink of hell, what more can they really do?

Review:

Ruthless Fae is the second book in the Zodiac Academy series and it was only somewhat better than the first. The time it took me to get through this was almost painful and I did contemplate not continuing for a while. I’m glad I did make it through as it did start to get better but it was almost a little too late.

The writing, especially the dialogue is still quite cringey and I’m starting to think that this is written for a younger audience. Which would make sense if it was for all of the sexual content. Boy did that get ramped up in this instalment. It seems funny to say that these parts were one of the least cringe bits of this book but it’s true. They also showed that there is potential for the writing style to evolve for a more mature audience.

The last five or so chapters were the best parts of this series so far. Also the party Darcy and Tory go to with the celestial heirs. You finally get into some action and it was very exciting to read.

I love the idea of pitball and I’m glad we finally got to witness a game. Especially because of the events that followed. The action was turned up to ten and we FINALLY got to see what these all-powerful faes can really do.

The only thing that really bugged me was that Darcy and Tory seemed to suddenly be very powerful in the last few chapters and I don’t know where it came from. It should have been much more of a struggle for them to wield their magic as they aren’t even slightly trained, but apparently not.

Although it took forever for me to get through Ruthless Fae I have decided to continue with the series as it definitely has the potential to be great.

Rating: 3.5 out of 5.
