Best Character of The Episode

This will happen often but I have to give it to Lorelai. She is an absolute queen and I would be doing her a disservice if I didn’t give her this title. Her humour is so hilarious and quite like my own. I fancy myself as a bit of a Lorelai Gilmore.

Best Supporting/Obscure Character

The harp player Drella. She isn’t in the episode for very long but she is such a savage I love her. I think she’s in the first season for a few episodes so I won’t be surprised if I mention her again.

Favourite Scenes

The very first scene is one of my absolute favourites. Not only is it hilarious (more on that in best quotes/lines) but Luke’s is just so cosy. It’s such a great way to start the series as so much time is spent at Luke’s.

Sookie’s introduction has also got to be one of my favourites. She’s sat on the floor surrounded by fallen pots and pans and it really shows how chaotic she is. She’s definitely one of my favourite characters.

Sookie cooking in the kitchen and there is pure chaos going on around her. The other chefs are trying to prevent her from hurting herself as she goes to get something out of the oven with her bare hands and she’s causing just general mayhem. It’s very subtle but so funny, espeically at the end where she haphazardly throws a towel over her shoulder onto the hob and it sets on fire.

Best Quotes/Lines

The opening scene where a guy, who is apparently named Joey, tries to hit on both Lorelai and Rory is so funny; Lorelai: Oh, hi. You really like my table don’t you? Joey: I was just, uh – Lorelai: Getting to know my daughter. This leads to possibly the most hilarious line of the episode from Rory “Are you my new daddy?”. That line gets me every time. Potentially one of the funniest things Rory says throughout the entire show and it’s the first thing she says.

Lorelai on the phone with Chilton admissions: “Well, but she’s supposed to start Monday. It just doesn’t give me a lot of time to pull a bank job. (pause) Well, never mind, I was just kidding. (pause) No, a bank job is robbing a bank but –”. What makes this part so funny is that you can’t hear the admissions person. I would really like to know what their reaction was to Lorelai talking about robbing a bank.

The moment where Rory and Dean meet for the first time is actually very funny. Rory is exactly like her mom and basically doesn’t know when to stop talking. “It’s my mother’s name too. She named me after herself. She was lying in the hospital thinking about how men name boys after themselves all the time, you know, so why couldn’t women? She says her feminism just kind of took over. Though personally, I think a lot of Demerol also went into that decision. I never talk this much.” I love the story of why Lorelai named Rory after herself, if I’m remembering correctly it’s a bit of a running joke in the show. Please correct me if I’m wrong, but I definitely remember it being mentioned a few times.

Favourite Outfit

I actually love the outfit Rory wears to school. Lorelai makes fun of her for it, but I love that jumper.

Favourite Setting

If I didn’t mention Luke’s in this section then I would have to be crazy. It’s my favourite setting of the entire show other than Stars Hollow itself and the first time you see it, it’s so cosy. Also, I’ve never noticed before that it’s in a different location in this episode.

Best Musical Moment

There isn’t much music in this series but the inclusion of There She Goes by The La’s in the opening sequence is great. Such a classic that instils a ton of nostalgia in me.

Thoughts/Opinions That Don’t Fit Into A Specific Category

I’m just putting it out there that Dean is a little bit creepy. I’ve never been a big fan of him and the fact that he tells Rory he’s been watching her every day is very strange. Big red flag if you ask me.
