Episode Synopsis
Rory’s Birthday Parties: Emily throws Rory an elegant birthday party and invites Chilton students, but Rory is embarrassed that the kids she doesn’t get along with have been forced to come to the party by their own wealthy parents.
Cast
Best Character
I love Luke in this episode. He does a really nice thing for Rory’s birthday and you really start to see the chemistry between him and Lorelai grow.
Best Supporting/Obscure Character
Those poor people cleaning up after the party Emily throws for Rory. I can’t imagine how degrading it must be to have someone shout at you for not putting cheese in different bags.
Favourite Scene
The moment when Lorelai comes into Rory’s bedroom at four in the morning to wish her a happy birthday. It’s the exact time that she was born and the story Lorelai tells her of her birth is so funny. Especially the part about her throwing ice at the nurses.
This isn’t really a scene but Luke baking Rory a cake and blowing up balloons to put on a table for her in the diner is so cute. I love him so much.
Best Quotes/Lines
LORELAI: What’s that?
EMILY: It’s dessert.
LORELAI: It’s pudding.
EMILY: Well, if you knew what it was, then why did you ask?
LORELAI: You don’t like pudding.
EMILY: Yes, but you like pudding.
LORELAI: Oh, I love pudding. I worship it. I have a bowl up on the mantel at home with the Virgin Mary, a glass of wine, and $1 next to it.
I just love when Lorelai goes off on a tangent like this. It’s always funny and actually reminds me a lot of myself. Which is probably weird to say, but I’m very much a Lorelai.
RORY: So, is this party grandma’s having going to be a big deal?
LORELAI: Not really. The government will close that day. Flags will fly at half-mast. Barbra Streisand will give her final concert again. Now, the Pope has previous plans, but he’s trying
to get out of them. However, Elvis and Jim Morrison are coming and they’re bringing chips.
This is the same as the lines above. It’s the fact that Lorelai comes up with this stuff on the fly. It’s just too good, I always lose it at the ‘flags will fly at half-mast’.
LUKE: Will you marry me?
LORELAI: What?
LUKE: Just looking for something to shut you up.
This. Is. So. Freaking. Cute. Obviously at this point it didn’t really mean much but in this episode you do see their relationship develop slightly. I’m a big fan of Luke and Lorelai together.
RORY: So, do I look older?
LORELAI: Oh, yeah. You walk into Denny’s before 5:00, you’ve got yourself a discount.
RORY: Good deal.
Speaks for itself really, hilarious.
Favourite Outfit
Rory wears a very fetching pink two-toned feather boa and paper tiara at her second birthday party and it’s quite the look. This outfit could not have made the two parties seem more different.
Thoughts/Opinions That Don’t Fit Into A Specific Category
I still find it quite funny that Emily is the first person to notice that Luke and Lorelai like each other. Especially as when they do eventually get together (don’t blame me for spoilers it is inevitable in these posts) she doesn’t approve of him.
Emily is very strange in this episode. I don’t know if I hate her or feel sorry for her. Although I do suppose everything she gets upset/angry about is because of her own actions, so actually I don’t feel that bad for her.
If I really didn’t like Dean the last scene where he gives Rory a present for her birthday would be cute. It’s the first time Lorelai realises that she’s getting older and it’s actually a strange feeling for the viewer. She’s obviously a bit distressed because her daughter is showing interest in a boy for the first time, but as the viewer we’ve only ever known Rory as being 16. I don’t know if that made any kind of sense, it’s hard to explain.
