Audiobook Review: The Summer I Turned Pretty by Jenny Han

Synopsis:

Some summers are just destined to be pretty.

When each summer begins, Belly leaves her school life behind and escapes to Cousins Beach, the place she has spent every summer of her life. Not only does the beach house mean home away from home, but her favourite people are there: Susannah, her mother’s best friend, and her sons, Conrad and Jeremiah. Belly has been chasing Conrad for as long as she can remember, and more than anything, she hopes this summer will be different. Despite distractions from a new guy named Cam and lingering looks from Conrad’s brother, Jeremiah, Belly’s heart belongs to Conrad. Will he offer his to her? Will this be the summer that changes everything?

Review:

So, I decided to read this because I really enjoyed the show and oh boy I was not disappointed. Now, I know it isn’t the best book in the world, but I felt so much joy and happiness while reading it and that’s what really matters.

I don’t know if I would have enjoyed it as much if I read the written book rather than listening to the audiobook though. The audiobook was narrated by Lola Tung, who plays Belly on the show, and she was incredible. It felt like watching the show in my head. She really acted it out and put so much emotion and personality into the characters. I especially liked when she’d deliver a funny line and you could tell she was smiling while recording it. Amazingly done, I can’t recommend the audio version enough. I’m so excited to read the next one as it’s Belly and Jeremiah’s book so Gavin Casalegno is also a narrator.

Everything I knew about this story came from the show so I was actually pleasantly surprised when it wasn’t a complete carbon copy. The book shows a much deeper history between Belly, Jeremiah and Conrad and it was so fun to listen to. I liked finding out where Junior Mint came from and how Jeremiah was Belly’s first kiss. This added so much to the experience of both the book and the show, which I’m currently rewatching.

I listened to the entirety of The Summer I Turned Pretty in one sitting and I do not regret a thing. It was such an enjoyable experience and if you’ve been thinking about reading this series, definitely check out the audiobooks.

Rating: 4 out of 5.
