Book Confessions: I’ll Never Outgrow YA Books

I can honestly never see myself outgrowing YA books. I’ve been reading them from quite a young age and I can’t see myself stopping anytime soon. Now I know I’m not actually that old yet, I’m turning 25 this year, but other people my age already think they are too childish. Well, that could never be me.

If we’re being really honest a lot of YA books these days toe the line of NA, especially the ones with more mature content. I’m looking at you A Court of Thorns and Roses. Plus whenever I’m reading YA I never get the feeling of “I’m too old for this” or “this feels too immature for me”. Personally, I think YA does stretch to around the age of 24 because that is technically a young adult right?

I’ve never truly understood what age group YA is actually for because a lot of people seem to think that it is for teens, but teen reads are a complete genre on their own. So confusing.

However, in the last few years I finally decided to stop letting what other people think about what I read, actually influence the types of books I read. So what if I want to read a slightly cringey and totally cliche academy trope story? It’s got nothing to do with them.

That decision is most definitely what solidified my feelings on this. I love YA books and most of my all-time favourite reads are YA so what difference will me getting older really make?

I can’t talk about YA books without mentioning the covers. Right now they are killing the game with the pretty covers. Adult fiction covers (some not all) really don’t do it for me. On occasion, I have found some really pretty ones. However, I am not ready for those covers that have a white couple in a promiscuous pose on the front (if you know, you know). I like my painted-style covers with pretty artwork.

I personally believe that YA is a genre that can be enjoyed by any age and I will stand by that statement for the rest of my life. The only factor that really makes them YA is the age of the characters. A lot of these books deal with real serious issues and for me, they will stand the test of time.

It goes without saying that I will find new book types I like as I get older but I don’t think that has anything to do with age. More so with making new discoveries. Last year I started reading more adult fiction and found that I quite liked some of it. But…

I will forever and always be a YA reader.
