Episode synopsis

S2 EP16: There’s the Rub – Lorelai and Emily spend a weekend at a health spa. Back at home, Rory looks forward to a rare evening alone, but Paris, Jess, and Dean all drop by.

Cast

Lauren Graham…Lorelai Gilmore

Milo Ventimiglia…Jess Mariano

Kelly Bishop…Emily Gilmore

Sean Gunn…Kirk Gleason

Shelly Cole…Madeline Lynn

Best character

Emily getting excited to go to the spa with Lorelai is so cute. She’s clearly very excited to be spending time with her and Lorelai is such a brat the whole time. It’s nice to see Emily making an effort.

Best quotes and one liners

LORELAI: Two days of total mind-numbing pampering. Massages, facials, aromatherapy.

EMILY: My goodness, you make it sound like heaven.

LORELAI: It’s as close as you’ll ever come to being a dog.

EMILY: I beg your pardon?

LORELAI: You know, a whole life of nothing but eating, sleeping, lying on your back and getting rubbed.

EMILY: Oh, look at this place. It’s lovely. And that smell what is that, eucalyptus?

LORELAI: I don’t know.

EMILY: Well, it’s lovely. Oh Lorelai, come over here, look. They have cucumber slices in the water.

LORELAI: Oh wow! Now if they have ranch dressing in the soap dispensers, this place is great.

RORY: You should stay.

PARIS: Stay?

RORY: Yeah. We could hang out, maybe watch some TV. You can even spend the night if you don’t wanna drive all the way back to Hartford.

PARIS: Spend the night, like a slumber party?

RORY: Sort of.

PARIS: You’re just doing this because I lied to Dean for you, right?

RORY: I’m doing this because it’s what you do with friends.

PARIS: We’re friends?

RORY: I’m not sure if there is an exact definition for what we are, but I do think it falls somewhere in the bizarro friends-ish realm. Come on, stay.

PARIS: Okay. But if you’re doing all this so you can freeze my bra, I’ll kill you.

RORY: Duly noted.

Final thoughts and fun facts

I’m not sure if this is intentional but Rory wears a similar jacket to Jess in one of the last scenes of the episode. I’m hoping it is intentional.

There are two great continuity issues in this episode, one long-standing, the other just a bit silly. These are:

When Paris calls home to say she’s staying for dinner at Rory’s, she speaks Spanish, but it has already been established that her Nanny is Portuguese.

The Indian food Rory claimed all day she was going to have for dinner and even ordered never showed up. She even ate dinner with Paris and Jess when Jess brought food. Then Dean shows up with ice cream. Still no Indian food, it never came.
