Audiobook Review: Trusting Blake by Estelle Maskame

Synopsis:

Trusting Blake is the electrifying sequel to Becoming Mila following Blake and Mila through the heat-filled days of a tempestuous summer.

What the hell just happened?! One cheating dad, one furious mom, and Mila stuck in the middle.

Enter chaos. Hit by an onslaught of revelations, Mila’s life is turned upside down. And when her A-list parents jet in from LA, they bring nothing but conflict, leaving Mila feeling betrayed and her Tennessee fun at a standstill.

But Blake is still there – with his easy smile, comforting touch and his guitar – and Mila turns to him more and more. Things are heating up between them and the pressure is becoming intense.

As the drama unfolds between their families and life starts to unravel, can Mila and Blake keep it together as summer draws to a close?

Review:

Trusting Blake picks up exactly where you left off in Becoming Mila. There is no ‘here’s what happened in case you forgot’, it’s straight into the action and oh boy a lot happens in the first chapter. I picked this up only a week or so after finishing book one and I already forgot what happened at the end, so the start was a little jarring. I definitely didn’t enjoy Trusting Blake as much as book one but it was still a pretty decent read. Well, other than the audio issues.

The production of the audiobook is all over the place. For a while the volume kept getting quiet on dialogue and loud for everything else. I was hoping this would only be a problem at the start of the book, but it continued for the whole thing. Did no one listen to it once it was all put together?

Apparently Mila’s mom is ‘furious’ about her cheating husband, which really doesn’t come across in the story. She seems to forgive him almost instantly and I really do wish the women in these books were more likeable.

All through the first book and a lot of this book, I really liked Mila. I liked that she was headstrong, knew what she wanted and started to stand up for herself. Well that all went out the window when another girl was after Blake’s attention. If he’s told you that he loves you, and only you, why would you question that and literally physically harm the other girl because she also likes him? I get that they’re teenagers so they’re a bit dramatic, but if you think you’re mature enough to sleep together then you should be mature enough to realise that just because another girl likes your boyfriend doesn’t mean he’s going to run off with her. The title of the book is literally ‘Trusting Blake’.  I hate to say it but Mila deserved what happened in the end.

I did think this was a very entertaining read and again the narrator did a really good job. At no point did I wish for the book to end sooner. If anything this felt like I was waiting for something to happen. A lot of the plot line felt like it was gearing up for the time jump that is going to happen for the third book. Which is fine I guess, but makes me think this didn’t need to be a three book series.

Rating: 2.5 out of 5.
