Book Haul: September 2025

Murder High by Lauren Muñoz

The cover of this book was instantly recognisable. I knew straightaway who the author was and it was an instant buy. I read Lauren Muñoz’s debut novel last year and it was pretty good. I’m always on the lookout for great YA thriller mysteries, which is not an easy task.

I do love a murder mystery party that has an actual murder. It’s such an obvious concept for a thriller mystery, but it’s great. It works more often than it doesn’t, in my opinion.

Synopsis: The dead body should have been fake. But it wasn’t. Now there’s all to play for…

For decades, J. Everett High has staged an annual murder mystery to put its criminology students to the test. And this year, crime junkie Dulce Castillo is dead set on winning. Soon, the game kicks off, and the student playing the victim, Xavier Torres, is found poisoned in the school’s greenhouse…except his death isn’t pretend.

IT’S MURDER.

When the authorities open an investigation, all the evidence points to Sierra Fox, Xavier’s ex-girlfriend and Dulce’s ex-best friend. Claiming innocence and desperate to clear her name, Sierra begs Dulce to look past their bad blood and find the culprit.

After all, Dulce knows this school better than any investigator ever could, but she’ll have to use caution to solve this mystery. Because these historic halls are full of suspects with no shortage of motives. And the game has turned deadly…

How to Write a Rom-Com by Cristina Wolf

I bought this book in the hope that I can use it in an upcoming series that I haven’t begun posting yet. It’s a ‘best of’ series that I really want to do, but I don’t have a lot of options to use yet. It’s a weirdly hard genre/trope to find.

The synopsis of this book is giving Beach Read vibes and if it’s anywhere near as good, I’ll be very happy.

Synopsis: Lucy Bowen has sworn off love.

After too many failed relationships, she’s over the fairytale – but working at NYC’s biggest romance publisher, Heartwarming, means she can’t escape it. When the company’s bestselling author, Ruby Jones, threatens to leave due to dwindling sales (and a complete lack of inspiration), Lucy’s boss takes drastic action.

Her new assignment? Go to a small lakeside town and find the spark for Ruby’s next big love story.

Lucy expects picture-perfect charm, but the town – and its grumpy yet extremely attractive restaurant owner, Liam – have other ideas. He’s skeptical of city folk, and she has zero interest in falling for a small-town cliché. But rom-com rule number one? Love finds you when you least expect it…

The Vanishing Cherry Blossom Bookshop by Takuya Asakura

This isn’t the type of book I usually pick up, but the promise of a cosy bookshop really intrigued me. I’m not one for emotional reads or even just general fiction. I’m a big romance, fantasy and thriller girl, so this will be interesting for me. I’ve wanted to see for a while if I can enjoy a general fiction book. I’ve tried women’s fiction before and I think I couldn’t relate to it at that time as I was a little younger. Maybe once I’ve reached a certain age I’ll enjoy it more.

Synopsis: As the last petal falls, the final page is turned…

Welcome to The Cherry Blossom Bookshop, a haven for book lovers that only appears during the fleeting cherry blossom season. Nestled amidst the bloom of delicate petals, you’ll find a sanctuary for those burdened by regrets and past sorrows. Here, Sakura, the mysterious young owner, and her wise calico cat, Kobako, patiently await the arrival of souls in need of solace and healing.

Told over four seasons, each visitor to the bookshop holds a book that bridges their past and present, guiding them towards understanding and acceptance. Within the antique charm of the shop and the soothing aroma of freshly brewed coffee, Sakura and Kobako help their guests confront their lingering sadness through the power of stories, enabling them to move forward with renewed hope.
