My Favourite YouTube Gaming Series #24

Is this Game Trying to Kill Me? – Gab Smolders & Jacksepticeye

Game synopsis: “A mix of horror and first-person puzzle. You are trapped inside a cabin deep in the forest, and its owner offers to play a computer game in exchange for freedom. But the cabin and the game are much more connected than you might think. Traps from the game begin to appear in reality, and your actions in the cabin affect the computer game. And very soon you realize that the stake in this game is your life!”

This is definitely a playthrough I will find myself rewatching again and again. It’s strangely cosy considering it’s a horror game but that’s the vibe Gab Smolders brings to all of her videos. Plus, I love all of her videos with Sean (Jacksepticeye). You get to see a different side to him when he’s in her videos and it’s really cute. I love how he gives all of the characters different voices, a common occurrence in his own videos.

Is this Game Trying to Kill Me is genuinely one of the coolest games I have seen in a very long time. Not only do I really love the art style, but the game play mechanics are brilliant. Having the player interact with objects in the environment and also in a game within the game is so smart. The first time the in game, game (confusing) had an effect on what happened in the house you’re stuck in blew my mind. To think this is made by an indie developer is seriously impressive. More people need to be playing/talking about this game.

The puzzles are also really fun. They’re just the right level of difficulty, but you can tell a lot of thought went into creating them. I think if you also played this with someone, like Gab and Sean have, it would be really fun trying to figure them out. I’d never remember how to solve any of the puzzles, so I think I’d be up for playing this with my partner.

The art style of this game is insanely cool. I love how the ‘game’ on the computer looks like a RPG horror maker game (if you know, you know). This style is so nostalgic for me. I grew up watching Youtubers play games like Ib, The Crooked Man, The Witch’s House and Corpse Party, so it’s pretty obvious how much I love this style of game. I also love how stylised the rest of the game is. I can’t quite explain it but there’s something really satisfying about how this game looks. I’m a first person horror girly through and through. I think they’re more immersive and the atmosphere is off the charts.

There isn’t a ton of different music in this game but I do really like the score that’s playing throughout the whole game. Again, it creates a great atmosphere and is just spooky enough that it sets you a little on edge. Which is at odds with the kinda cutesy graphics, but I probably think they’re cute because I’ve always loved spooky things.

I think this video, which is less than two hours long, would be a perfect watch on Halloween night if you’re not a fan of seriously scary horror. I’d say it doesn’t really have jumpscares so anyone could find this an enjoyable experience.
