Re-Read Review: Starcrossed by Josephine Angelini

Advertisements

Synopsis:

Destiny brought them together. The gods will keep them apart.

When shy, awkward Helen Hamilton meets Lucas Delos for the first time, she thinks two things: the first, that he is the most ridiculously beautiful boy she has seen in her life; the second, that she wants to kill him with her bare hands.

An ancient curse means Lucas and Helen are destined to loathe one another. But sometimes love is stronger than hate, and not even the gods themselves can prevent what will happen next…

Review:

It has been about eight years since I first read Starcrossed and honestly, I still love it. Maybe not as much as I did back then as I had previously rated it five stars, but it’s still pretty good. This series walked so Legendborn could run – they’re not about the same thing, but they both have scions and an ancient quest/war.

I talk about this a lot but Greek mythology is one of my favourite topics and I’m always down for inventive retellings. When I first read Starcrossed I didn’t actually know a lot about Greek mythology/history so I actually didn’t know what was going on half the time, but I do think reading this series is what piqued my interest.

Now, this book definitely isn’t perfect but it made me feel so nostalgic. I’m going to try to keep this review as spoiler free as possible as I don’t think this was a massively popular series and you may not have read it before. However, the romance, if you can call it that because they kiss like twice, is not great just yet. It does get better further into the series though.

The story is still so fun and inventive and I love the idea of scions. This story isn’t really about the Greek gods, but they do play a small part. Lucas is a “son of Apollo” which means he can manipulate light. I do love the Fates though and they play a huge part in this story.

I’m doing that classic thing where I have no idea how to explain why I like this book so much. I do think a lot of it is to do with nostalgia and maybe I wouldn’t like this as much if I read it for the first time today, but it really is a fun series.

Rating: 4 out of 5.
