Moxie – Moxie by Jennifer Mathieu
I’ve only watched this film once, and it was quite a while ago now, but I really enjoyed it. Moxie was one of my favourite reads of 2017 and I’m so happy it got an adaptation. If you’ve never read the book or watched the film, you should definitely check them out.
Studying the Riot Grrrl movement was one of the best parts of my degree and when I wrote an essay on it, I referenced this book and how it is still influencing women today.
Synopsis: Moxie girls fight back!
Vivian Carter is fed up. Fed up with her small-town Texas high school that thinks the football team can do no wrong. Fed up with sexist dress codes and hallway harassment. But most of all, Viv Carter is fed up with always following the rules.
Viv’s mom was a punk rock Riot Grrrl in the ’90s, so now Viv takes a page from her mother’s past and creates a feminist zine that she distributes anonymously to her classmates. She’s just blowing off steam, but other girls respond. Pretty soon Viv is forging friendships with other young women across the divides of cliques and popularity rankings, and she realizes that what she has started is nothing short of a girl revolution.
The Summer I Turned Pretty – The Summer I Turned Pretty by Jenny Han
When I talk about this being a good show I’m talking about season one. I’ve made my opinion of Jeremiah very clear now, which makes season two almost unwatchable for me. Having Belly and Jeremiah ‘get together’ in season one made her seem like a bad person because of course she’s going to choose Conrad – don’t even get me started on the changes in season two.
Anyway, I’m making it sound like I don’t like this show but in reality season one is a comfort watch for me. It has major feel-good vibes and while it’s not entirely book-accurate, I love it. The debutante ball is everything.
I think I need to give season two another chance as, at the time of it releasing I’d just finished the books so everything Jeremiah did was annoying. I do think they’d changed a little too much in the second season, but it was still entertaining. Plus angsty Conrad is great.
Synopsis: Some summers are just destined to be pretty.
Belly measures her life in summers. Everything good, everything magical happens between the months of June and August. Winters are simply a time to count the weeks until the next summer, a place away from the beach house, away from Susannah, and most importantly, away from Jeremiah and Conrad. They are the boys that Belly has known since her very first summer — they have been her brother figures, her crushes, and everything in between. But one summer, one wonderful and terrible summer, the more everything changes, the more it all ends up just the way it should have been all along.
