Angus Thongs and Perfect Snogging (2008)
I used to be crazy obsessed with this film. So much so that I remember watching it when I was like 13 and crying because I wanted a boyfriend. That’s probably really embarrassing to admit but I’m fine with that. We’ve all been there right?
If you didn’t fancy Aaron Taylor Johnson back when this came out, you clearly never saw this film. He was everyone’s dream boy back then and honestly he probably still is now. I’m pretty sure this film was the first time I remember being genuinely attracted to someone. Aaron Taylor Johnson did that for a lot of people I reckon. I had a similar experience with Brittany Snow in John Tucker Must Die but more on that in a future post.
This is one of those coming of age films that stays with you forever. It’s definitely completely immature and I don’t think kids today would like it, but back in the 2000s, it was so scandalous you had to watch it. I remember the outrage at it being shown on Nickelodeon. It’s actually the only filmed rated a 12 to be shown on the network apparently. I have a feeling they cut the ‘bitch in uniform’ line because I definitely didn’t remember it as a kid. Shame, it’s the funniest part of the whole film.
Now that I live in Brighton I love this film even more as some of it was filmed in Brighton but mostly in Eastbourne. Which for anyone who doesn’t live in the UK is right next to Brighton. My favourite part of the entire film has to be the very beginning when Georgia runs through the streets of Eastbourne in an olive costume. I can’t hear She’s So Lovely by Scouting for Girls without picturing this scene. Absolutely iconic.
Another iconic part of this film is Ultraviolet by The Stiff Dylans. I legitimately still listen to it to this day. As a teen I didn’t realise they were an actual band. I probably also thought Aaron Taylor Johnson was actually playing the bass.
It’s been a while since I’ve watched this and talking about it today has made me realise I’m definitely due a re-watch. I’ll be doing it old-school with the physical DVD, obviously.
As with a few of the films I’ve talked about in this series, I did a full, in depth review of this film a few years ago. To this day, it’s the post that took me the longest to write so I’d appreciate it if you could check it out: Re-Watch Review: Angus, Thongs and Perfect Snogging
Synopsis: Based on the books by Louise Rennison, this tale follows 14-year-old Georgia Nicholson as she attempts to woo Robbie, one half of a pair of fraternal twins. Prone to getting herself into embarrassing situations and worried about her parent’s marriage, Georgia discovers that being a teen can be a pain in the neck.
