I started a very similar series to this quite some time ago, but I was only focusing on films. I’ve recently realised that there are so many TV couples that I absolutely adore. So with that in mind, any shows I mention may not have this trope as their main plot, but they have a specific couple with this trope that I love.
I’ve got a good amount of these posts planned over the next few months, but I need to sit down and write a list of all of the films and shows that use this trope.
Love, Rosie
I absolutely adore this film. Two of my all-time celebrity crushes starring alongside each other. Yes please! This is unironically one of my favourite films ever, even outside of this genre.
Childhood best friends to lovers is the best version of this trope, especially when they either don’t realise their feelings for each other or one of them has loved the other the whole time. This film features both of those and it’s just *chef’s kiss*.
Every time I watch this film it rips my heart out but also makes it sing and I love it for that. This is honestly the best film with this trope in my opinion. If you haven’t seen Love, Rosie you absolutely need to.
I’m 100% in need of a rewatch of Love, Rosie and as I’ve gotten a rotten cold at the time of writing this post, it’s the perfect time to watch it.
Synopsis: Rosie and Alex have been friends since childhood and cannot imagine themselves as a couple. However, when they head in different directions, they realise that they are made for each other.
New Girl
For me, Nick and Jess are the blueprint for this trope. Apparently, in the first season, Zooey Deschanel (Jess) and Jake Johnson (Nick) were directed to have as little physical contact as possible because their chemistry was thought to be too distracting. You can’t deny that their chemistry is insane. I’ve never wanted a couple to get together quite as badly as Nick and Jess. I also feel the same (but less intensely) about Schmidt and Cece. New Girl has so many great pairings.
I’d recently decided to stop my rewatch review series and sadly, it was before I got to any of the episodes with Nick and Jess together. I will be continuing my rewatch in my own time though as I need some New Girl in my life right now.
If you’re looking for a show to get properly stuck into, with a pairing that you can’t help but want together, you absolutely need to watch New Girl.
Synopsis: Jess, a bubbly, off-beat teacher, who is known to burst into song, catches her boyfriend with another woman. Newly homeless, she moves into a loft with three single guys she’s never met before. Nick, a jaded, law-school dropout isn’t the best of company. Schmidt is a flashy, eccentric businessman who believes he is Yahweh’s gift to women. Winston is a former athlete who doesn’t know what to do but really needs a win. Can this dysfunctional group handle the adorkable new girl?
