The Breath of Things: The Mist-Walker, Volume 1 by Stéphane Fert

The art style of The Mist-Walker may be one of my all-time favourites, and that’s not just me being over the top because of the type of post this is. It’s genuinely stunning and I love graphic novels that have fairly monochromatic tones (like Lore Olympus). This style is also what the graphic novel looks like on the inside, so you can only imagine just how incredible this is to read.
Having our main character, Temperance holding the side characters and part of the landscape is such a cool choice. Especially once you’ve read the graphic novel and you know what happens in the story. It’s great imagery, hats off to you Stéphane Fert.
The colour palette is also stunning. Dark purples, blues and pinks work so well thematically and obviously they work well aesthetically. It’s a colour combo that will (almost) always be a hit with me.
Synopsis: One day, everything was lost in the mist. No, not those little morning wisps or the thin type that follows rain. The really dense stuff. A pea-souper, a dark fog, thick and black like atomized ink. A mist that engulfs everything. But the mist also left something of a mutant, an ogress—or perhaps just a little girl that a grouchy old witch would decide to call Temperance and who would be brought up in a quiet village by a group of contented old women. Then one day, the mist returns. It wants her back. Now it’s time for the witches to dust off their charms and try to remember their old incantations and kung fu techniques as they set out on a great adventure that will determine young Temperance’s destiny.
Jonesy, Vol. 1 by Sam Humphries & Caitlin Rose Boyle

These covers couldn’t be more different if they tried. They’re quite literally the opposite of each other but I love that. The reasons why I love both covers in these posts are stark contrasts but they fit their respective genres so well.
This cover exudes chaotic energy and that’s exactly what you get on the inside. I also love that it’s the actual art style of the graphic novel. I hate when the style doesn’t match what’s inside – stop baiting me with pretty covers only to have basic art on the inside.
As you can see, this cover is very eye-catching thanks to its neon colour palette. I’d decided to check out this graphic novel purely because of how great this cover is. Caitlin Rose Boyle did such a great job with the illustrations.
Synopsis: A sarcastic teenager with the powers of cupid unleashes her preternatural matchmaking abilities on her school with hilarious and charming results.
Jonesy is a self-described “cool dork” who spends her time making zines nobody reads, watching anime, and listening to riot grrrl bands and 1D simultaneously. But she has a secret nobody knows. She has the power to make people fall in love! Anyone. With anything. She’s a cupid in plaid. With a Tumblr. There’s only one catch—it doesn’t work on herself. She’s gonna have to find love the old-fashioned way, and in the meantime, figure out how to distract herself from the real emotions she inevitably has to face when her powers go wrong…
