*I was given an ARC of Love Catch in exchange for an honest review. Thank you to West East Publishing and Laura Langa for my copy of this audiobook*
Synopsis:
Jilted at the game. Roommates by chance. Catching feelings by accident.
Humiliated after my MLB fiancé called off our engagement—in the middle of a baseball game, I did what any rational, rule-following girl would do: I climbed on top of the dugout to give him a piece of my mind.
I just didn’t expect to slip—or fall straight into the arms of Trevor Chapman.
Awkward? Totally. Except the team’s veteran catcher also happens to be my roommate. Trevor’s protective, patient, and ten years my senior—but I’m the one sharing custody of his rescue calico and handling the personal taxes for half of the Waves lineup.
To shake off my post-breakup funk, I make a list of adventures—and rope Trevor in. With every item we cross off, it’s harder to ignore that I’m catching feelings faster than Trevor snags fastballs.
I’ve already been burned by a Waves player, so letting myself fall again feels risky—even when Trevor has always been there to catch me.
Love Catch is a closed-door sports romcom featuring a jilted bride, her protective MLB roommate, and one very sweet calico rescue cat.
Review:
I listened to the majority of the audiobook of Love Catch in one day, so the finer details are a little hazy, but I genuinely enjoyed this. The narrators did a great job, the overall production was pretty good and the plot was interesting.
I don’t want to spoil the big twist, but it was a little ridiculous. The motives behind Kenzie’s (ex) fiancé wanting to get married were crazy, and the fact that he calls the whole thing off because she came to one of his games is even crazier. Kenzie deserved so much better and I’m glad she found that in the end.
Something I really loved about Love Catch was the spotlight on animal adoption. Not only does Trevor have an adopted cat, but they also rescue a second one, have multiple sections of visiting the rescue centre and they even talk about an animal (Princess the pig) who I’ve discovered will be in the next book. It’s such a nice thing to include in a romance book and who doesn’t love a man who loves animals?
Speaking of the man who loves animals, Trevor was a wonderful male main character. He was thoughtful, always putting Kenzie first and honestly, patient. At any point he could have told Kenzie how he feels about her, but as she seemed happy he kept it to himself.
I also liked that Kenzie wasn’t instantly in love with Trevor. Her romantic feelings towards him built over time. There’s nothing I love more than a romance built from friendship, it makes it so much more believable as they already had a strong connection, and let’s be honest, the chemistry was off the charts from the get go.
The friends to lovers arc was done very well overall. There’s even a “touch her and die” moment, which I know a lot of readers are going to love. I don’t think contemporaries are ever intense enough for this line, but Kenzie’s ex fiancé deserves it – he’s legit the worst.
This is also technically an age gap romance, which is not something I ever pick up intentionally. However, it’s a 10 year gap between a 36 and 46 year old, so not gross in the slightest. They do act like 46 is ancient sometimes though. Trevor seems to have constant back pain and everyone worries about his health.
There were a lot of pretty outlandish moments in Love Catch but most of them were in good humour. At one point Kenzie goes to one of the baseball games dressed as Mallory’s “grandpa” as she’s banned from the stadium due to the scene she caused when her fiancé called off the wedding. I actually thought this was pretty funny.
There were also some flaws with this book but I listened to it almost three weeks ago and didn’t make any notes, so this review is short and I can only remember the parts I like. Which isn’t a terrible thing I suppose.
