There have been some great deals on books this month. I’ve got a couple of highly anticipated reads for just 99p and I’ve continued one of my collections.

The Sunbearer Trials by Aiden Thomas

I’m yet to read one of Aiden Thomas’ books but I’ve heard a lot of great things. Hence why I’ve bought this without checking out Cemetery Boys yet. 

I love trials in books, especially fantasy ones, so this sounds right up my street.

Synopsis: “Only the most powerful and honorable semidioses get chosen. I’m just a Jade. I’m not a real hero.”

As each new decade begins, the Sun’s power must be replenished so that Sol can keep traveling along the sky and keep the evil Obsidian gods at bay. Ten semidioses between the ages of thirteen and eighteen are selected by Sol himself as the most worthy to compete in The Sunbearer Trials. The winner carries light and life to all the temples of Reino del Sol, but the loser has the greatest honor of all―they will be sacrificed to Sol, their body used to fuel the Sun Stones that will protect the people of Reino del Sol for the next ten years.

Teo, a 17-year-old Jade semidiós and the trans son of Quetzal, goddess of birds, has never worried about the Trials…or rather, he’s only worried for others. His best friend Niya―daughter of Tierra, the god of earth―is one of the strongest heroes of their generation and is much too likely to be chosen this year. He also can’t help but worry (reluctantly, and under protest) for Aurelio, a powerful Gold semidiós and Teo’s friend-turned-rival who is a shoo-in for the Trials. Teo wouldn’t mind taking Aurelio down a notch or two, but a one-in-ten chance of death is a bit too close for Teo’s taste.

But then, for the first time in over a century, Sol chooses a semidiós who isn’t a Gold. In fact, he chooses two: Xio, the 13-year-old child of Mala Suerte, god of bad luck, and…Teo. Now they must compete in five mysterious trials, against opponents who are both more powerful and better trained, for fame, glory, and their own survival.

Funny Story by Emily Henry

I’ve only read one Emily Henry book so far, but I think I now own all of them across various mediums. I really want to read another one soon, but they do tend to be on the slightly longer side for me. I never used to bat an eye at books over 400 pages, but now they feel super long.

Synopsis: Daphne always loved the way her fiancé Peter told their story. How they met (on a blustery day), fell in love (over an errant hat), and moved back to his lakeside hometown to begin their life together. He really was good at telling it…right up until the moment he realized he was actually in love with his childhood best friend Petra.

Which is how Daphne begins her new story: Stranded in beautiful Waning Bay, Michigan, without friends or family but with a dream job as a children’s librarian (that barely pays the bills), and proposing to be roommates with the only person who could possibly understand her predicament: Petra’s ex, Miles Nowak.

Scruffy and chaotic—with a penchant for taking solace in the sounds of heart break love ballads—Miles is exactly the opposite of practical, buttoned up Daphne, whose coworkers know so little about her they have a running bet that she’s either FBI or in witness protection. The roommates mainly avoid one another, until one day, while drowning their sorrows, they form a tenuous friendship and a plan. If said plan also involves posting deliberately misleading photos of their summer adventures together, well, who could blame them?

But it’s all just for show, of course, because there’s no way Daphne would actually start her new chapter by falling in love with her ex-fiancé’s new fiancée’s ex…right?

A Curse for True Love by Stephanie Garber

I’m yet to read book two in this series but when this popped up on my Kindle for 99p, I had to buy it. I had started collecting the physical copies of this series, but now that I got the entire series on my Kindle for less than £3, I don’t think it’s worth me buying this again. Well, unless I absolutely love it and want to add them to my collection.

Synopsis: Two villains, one girl, and a deadly battle for happily ever after.

Evangeline Fox ventured to the Magnificent North in search of her happy ending, and it seems as if she has it. She’s married to a handsome prince and lives in a legendary castle. But Evangeline has no idea of the devastating price she’s paid for this fairytale. Critical Role: The Mighty Nein Origins: Fjord Stone by Chris “Doc” Wyatt, Kevin Burke, Travis Willingham & Matthew Mercer

I’m slowly continuing my collection of the Mighty Nein Origins graphic novels. They’re not cheap by any means so I’m really having to space out buying them. Well, I did get tempted by a 3 for 2 offer at my local comic book shop, but they only had two I wanted.

Synopsis: More than just an orcish face!

Growing up in an orphanage on the Menagerie Coast, Fjord Stone has never been comfortable with the assumptions people draw from his half-orc heritage. But his sweet, sensitive nature will do him no favours in Port Damali. Luckily, a chance encounter on the docks lands Fjord with a job, a mentor, and more adventure than he could ever dream of on the path that will eventually lead him to the rest of the Mighty Nein!
