After looking on Goodreads for the synopses of books I’ve bought recently, I’ve realised I need to start checking ratings and reviews. I was going to include a book in this post but I then saw it has a rating of less than three and now I’m not sure whether I should read it or not. I’m not one to base my opinions on what others think but every review I saw said the main character was insufferable. Moral of the story: check out the book before you spend money on it.
Thankfully, the rest of the books I’m going to talk about today have decent reviews and hopefully, I can give them good ones myself.
Escaping Mr. Rochester by L.L. McKinney
This instantly caught my eye when I was browsing the Kindle monthly deals. Not only does it have a gorgeous cover, but the title hints that this is a retelling and it is! Extra points for this book. I’ve been on the lookout for more and this one sounds very interesting.
Synopsis: Jane has no interest in a husband. Eager to make her own way in the world, she accepts the governess position at Thornfield Hall. Though her new employer, Edward Rochester, has a charming air—not to mention a handsome face—Jane discovers that his smile can sharpen in an instant. Plagued by Edward’s mercurial mood and the strange wails that echo through the corridors, she grows suspicious of the secrets hidden within Thornfield Hall—unaware of the true horrors lurking above her very head.
On the topmost floor, Bertha is trapped in more ways than one. After her whirlwind marriage to Edward turned into a nightmare, he locked her away as revenge for withholding her inheritance. Now his patience grows thin in the face of Bertha’s resilience and Jane’s persistent questions, and both young women are in more danger than they realize. When their only chance at safety—and perhaps something more—is in each other’s arms, can they find and keep one another safe before Edward’s dark machinations close in around them?
Hate Mail by Donna Marchetti
I’d thought about buying this since it came out and the fact that it kept popping up finally pushed me to get it. We all know I love a contemporary romance, especially one where the love interests dislike each other to begin with.
Synopsis: Naomi and Luca have been pen-pals since fifth-grade. Well, more like bitter rivals caught in an epic battle of insults and verbal jousting…
But what starts as a hilarious chain of hate filled letters, slowly develops into a friendship spanning coasts and years. That is until one day, years later, when the letters suddenly stop.
It’s been two years since Naomi last heard from Luca. Two years since the letter that changed everything.
But when a new envelope turns up out of the blue at her desk at the local news station, Naomi is determined not to let Luca have the final word.
Drive Me Crazy by Carly Robyn
I’m an F1 fan, I keep seeing F1 romances pop up and I’ve finally taken the plunge. This could be cringe and utter garbage, but I’m curious. It has decent reviews, but you never know.
Synopsis: Some things burn hot on and off the track…
A tumultuous season filled with reckless driving, drunken debauchery, and more bad press than a kinky politician leaves five-time Formula 1 World Champion Blake Hollis in desperate need of an image overhaul. To redeem his tarnished reputation, his team decides it’s time for drastic measures. Their solution: a tell-all book that showcases his illustrious career and presents a more respectable public persona.
Enter Ella Gold, a once-renowned sportswriter and podcast host desperate for a fresh start. She accepts the challenge of writing Blake’s biography knowing that getting close to the brooding Brit will be challenging. But interviewing Blake can’t be worse than staying in NYC where rumors of her podcast’s demise follow her like a bad Hinge date.
As they spend the season together, sparks fly, barriers break, and their dynamic shifts from antagonistic to something entirely unexpected. Throughout twenty-one races around the world, they’ll face the ultimate interview question: can they write their own happy ending, or is their love destined to crash and burn?
