Book Review: Dear Spencer by Danielle Keil

Synopsis:

Everyone at Ryder High knows what it means to have a teal envelope taped to their locker on the first day of the month.

Spencer Matthews assumes the Secret Admirers game is on pause, since it’s June and school is out for summer.

Then a teal envelope with her name on it arrives in the mail. Spencer is eager to play, but her Secret Admirer makes her work for her clues by playing a trivia game app he created.

Her spreadsheet of suspects is color coded, and Spencer is confident she knows who her admirer is after only the first two clues.

But something goes wrong, threatening the future of the game.

Will Spencer be able to continue playing?

And if so, will her guesses still be right?

Review:

I wouldn’t say Dear Spencer was my favourite of the series so far, but it wasn’t my least favourite either. I think the mystery was more interesting this time as the way in which Spencer found out clues wasn’t just a scavenger hunt like one of the others. The inclusion of an app was so fun and it did give away a clue on who it could be. I can’t believe Spencer didn’t figure it out straight away.

Dear Spencer is the first book in the Love Notes series where it has been obvious from the very beginning who the secret admirer is. This was another secret admirer that actually made sense as well. They’ve known each other for a long time and they have a lot in common. I won’t say who just in case you want to read this, but this one has a very popular trope in it.

I’m hoping we get an instalment soon that ends with them just being friends. Or that the girl doesn’t want to participate. I get that this is a lighthearted YA romance series, but it’s not believable that every single girl wants to play the game.

I’ll definitely be continuing this series next time I have Kindle Unlimited. It’s such an easy series to get into and each book has such low stakes drama. Also, they’re super short so they’re great to pick up if you’re in a bit of a slump.

Rating: 4 out of 5.
