Book Review: Gossip Girl by Cecily von Ziegesar

Synopsis:

Welcome to New York City’s Upper East Side, where my friends and I live, go to school, play, and sleep—sometimes with each other.

S is back from boarding school, and if we aren’t careful, she’s going to win over our teachers, wear that dress we couldn’t fit into, steal our boyfriends’ hearts, and basically ruin our lives in a major way. I’ll be watching closely . . .

You know you love me,

Review:

I never thought I’d read the Gossip Girl series but when this popped up for 99p on Kindle, I thought ‘why not?’. I’ve watched the show at least three times all the way through, so I kind of knew what to expect from the book, but I feel like they actually toned down the book for the show. I haven’t watched it in a while so maybe I’m wrong, but I feel like they weren’t chain smoking and constantly drunk.

I feel like the show made the characters more likeable. Blair is actually a little pathetic in the book, at least in the first one. She doesn’t give me the ‘Queen B’ vibe that we all know and love her for. Also, the way they act and talk makes them sound so much younger than they are. I spent so much of the book in shock that 14 year olds were acting in such appalling ways (drinking, sex, drugs etc.) but then they’d mention being 17 and I’d be like ‘phew that’s not so bad’. Well, it’s still bad for the US but I’m from the UK so our legal ages are much lower.

This entire review has basically been me comparing the book to the show, but that’s why I read it in the first place. Unsurprisingly, reading this has made me want to watch the show again. I watched it as a young teen so it’s very nostalgic for me.

After reading The Princess Diaries recently and being massively disappointed by how problematic it was, I’m pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed reading this. It was outrageous and a little cringeworthy at times, but it was a quick and entertaining read.

Rating: 3 out of 5.
