Book Review: My Roommate Is a Vampire by Jenna Levine

Synopsis:

Cassie Greenberg loves being an artist, but itโ€™s a tough way to make a living. On the brink of eviction, sheโ€™s desperate when she finds a too-good-to-be-true apartment in a beautiful Chicago neighborhood. Cassie knows there has to be a catchโ€”only someone with a secret to hide would rent out a room for that price.

Of course, her new roommate Frederick J. Fitzwilliam is far from normal. He sleeps all day, is out at night on business, and talks like he walked out of a regency romance novel. He also leaves Cassie heart-melting notes around the apartment, cares about her art, and asks about her day. And he doesnโ€™t look half bad shirtless, on the rare occasions theyโ€™re both home and awake. But when Cassie finds bags of blood in the fridge that definitely werenโ€™t there earlier, Frederick has to come clean…

Cassieโ€™s sexy new roommate is a vampire. And he has a proposition for her.

Review:

I had high expectations going into My Roommate Is a Vampire as I remember seeing it absolutely everywhere when it was published. Iโ€™m not sure what I thought this would actually be like but it was an enjoyable read.

I donโ€™t say this often but this book would have benefitted from having a dual POV, especially as Frederick being a vampire is the main plot. You do get glimpses of this through his texts with other characters but it wasnโ€™t enough for me.

Speaking of the texts. I did love that each chapter started with either a text chain or letters. It was a great way to set up the chapter and it made the characters feel more real. The friendship between Frederick and Reginald was absolute favourite. The whole โ€˜he almost killed me but I love himโ€™ vibe was excellent.

I enjoyed the โ€˜lessonsโ€™ Caddie gave Frederick about living in the modern world, but I was hoping this would be more like the classic trope where they teach each other about relationships and fall in love. I donโ€™t know if that trope has an actual name, but I was thinking something along the lines of Practice Makes Perfect by Sarah Adams.

The worst part of the entire book was definitely the ending. The drama and resolution were over way too quickly and donโ€™t even get me started on how Cassie โ€˜saves the dayโ€™. It felt very much like the author went โ€˜Iโ€™ve put my characters in a life or death situation and I have no idea how Iโ€™m going to save them. Oh I know! TikTok.โ€ Yes, thatโ€™s literally how this book ends. A TikTok video ends the drama.

I did love the concept of My Roommate Is a Vampire. Itโ€™s such a fun idea and Iโ€™d definitely read more books from this author. I already have the next one set in this world and Iโ€™m excited to get to know Reginald more.

Rating: 3.5 out of 5.
