Book Review: Something Wicked by Gretchen Rue

Synopsis:

Recipe for a potion to demolish life as you know it:

Step one: pack up your life and move to your aunt’s old house in a small, sleepy town.

Step two: discover that she was a witch.

Step three: discover that you’re also a witch.

Step four: Add a sprinkle of butterflies for your childhood friend (who’s suddenly incredibly hot), a dash of prying neighbours who want you to leave their town and never come back, and – the key ingredient – a murder on the steps of your aunt’s old tea shop (which, as it happens, is also a magic apothecary).

Voila. Your spell is complete.

Review:

Something Wicked was a fun and quick read. I’d definitely recommend it if you have Kindle Unlimited.

I love a good witchy book set in a small town and my god was this town cute. A bookshop that serves pastries and tea is my idea of heaven. I wish The Earl’s Study was real and in my city, I’d be there every day.

The magic element of this wasn’t too exciting as our main character, Phoebe, has only just discovered that side of her life. However, it does have the potential to be great. I love the idea of brewing magical tea and these were some of my favourite parts. All of the pastry talk also made me very hungry, I am the biggest pastry lover in the world.

I really liked the cast of characters in Something Wicked and they all had interesting and fun quirks. My absolute favourite was Bob the cast, obviously.

The ‘mystery’ element was ok I guess. I much preferred the cosy day-to-day activities of selling books, brewing tea and baking. I think I’m not a huge fan of cosy mystery and I like tense ones with really intricate plots. Not that this one wasn’t intricate. There are many elements that build to the book’s resolution, but it did feel a bit too sudden. I think I would have preferred it to be developed over multiple books.

I’m assuming this will be a series as it seems like the romance is a slow burn. Not sure how on board I am with this romance yet, but if there’s a second book, we shall see.

Rating: 3 out of 5.

  1. ‘Something Wicked’ does not sound like the kind of book I would normally pick up, however in your review you mentioned how it was a quick read, cute, and not so heavy on the magic… and it sound just like the kind of thing I enjoy to read in-between heavier titles. And considering this is a low investment if bought as an e-book, you’ve convinced me to grab a copy. Loving all your reviews of late 🙂
