Games That Should Have Adaptations #5

Resident Evil 7 & 8

Game synopsis: In Resident Evil 7, Ethan Winters receives a mysterious message from his wife Mia, who has been missing for years. This leads him to a secluded plantation in rural Louisiana, where he finds his wife, only to discover that she’s violent and has bizarre regenerative powers.

I know what you’re thinking, there are loads of Resident Evil adaptations, however, I want one that’s actually good. Personally, I quite liked the Netflix show, but it probably wasn’t great for people who don’t know a lot about the franchise already. It’s one of my favourites, so I already know the lore and characters, but I can see why it didn’t do well. I’m annoyed we never got to meet Ada though.

The perfect adaptation for me would be focussed on the story of games seven and eight. I love the Winters’ story and their two games have some of the best atmospheres in the franchise. This is mostly because these games are first person, so they are far more immersive, but also because they’ve already tried making adaptations of the other stories and it never goes well.

These games also have excellent art direction, especially eight. Seven is mostly set in one house, but it has such a distictive look and it’s so creepy that I think it would be incredible. Also, if you’ve seen/played eight, you know just how impressive the art direction is – it’s kind of like European gothic, very cool.

There is so much lore in both seven and eight so I think it would make a really great TV show, but I don’t think I’d trust Netflix with anything Resident Evil again. I think maybe HBO would be the best based on how incredible The Last of Us was, but obviously, that’s no guarantee.

I’d like this to be live action because a large part of Resident Evil 7 is body horror. Which makes me sound weird, but it wouldn’t be as scary or impressive if it was animated. Also, as the art style of the game is hyper realistic, well as realistic as it could be, it makes sense for this to have real people in it. The VFX/CGI and make up would need to be incredible though.

The Resident Evil franchise is still incredibly popular and I do think an adaptation of it could be too. It needs the Pedro Pascal effect – hire a popular attractive actor as the main character and people who don’t know what it is or haven’t played the games, will be interested.
