Graphic Novel Review: Delicates by Brenna Thummler

Synopsis:

Marjorie Glatt’s life hasn’t been the same ever since she discovered a group of ghosts hiding in her family’s laundromat. Wendell, who died young and now must wander Earth as a ghost with nothing more than a sheet for a body, soon became one of Marjorie’s only friends. But when Marjorie finally gets accepted by the popular kids at school, she begins to worry that if anyone learns about her secret ghost friends, she’ll be labelled as a freak who sees dead people. With Marjorie’s insistence on keeping Wendell’s ghost identity a secret from her new friends, Wendell begins to feel even more invisible than he already is.

Eliza Duncan feels invisible too. She’s an avid photographer, and her zealous interest in finding and photographing ghosts gets her labelled as “different” by all the other kids in school. Constantly feeling on the outside, Eliza begins to feel like a ghost herself. Marjorie must soon come to terms with the price she pays to be accepted by the popular kids. Is it worth losing Wendell? Is she partially to blame for the bullying Eliza endures?

Review:

When I finally got around to reading Sheets last year, I was disappointed to find it wasn’t what I expected. I wasn’t a huge fan of the art style (well, mostly the character design) and I found the story a little difficult to follow at times.

However, I really enjoyed Delicates. The art style has really grown on me and I liked the character designs much more this time. I especially liked Tassi’s design, mostly because of her pink hair, but there was a real diversity in skin tones and body types and that felt very refreshing to see.

Once again, the settings were gorgeous. As the story is told just after the summer months this time, the palette has shifted to include more pink, purple, orange and blue and it was stunning. The transition into autumn was lovely and I especially loved the pumpkin patch/farm setting.

The characters feel more defined in Delicates and surprisingly, I found myself not liking Marjorie very much. I won’t explain why as it’s a spoiler, but what I can say is I love Eliza. She is a wonderful addition to the story and while her character arc is a little sad, her moments of happiness (especially her passion for photography) were a joy to witness.

Delicates covers much heavier themes than the first instalment, but these made the story more interesting in my opinion. I found my focus waning during my read of Sheets, but I could not put this down. These topics were handled in a delicate (pun not intended) manner and I think Brenna Thummler did a great job of converting these themes in a non-harmful way.

I have plans to read Lights at some point this year and hopefully, it’s even better than Delicates. So far, I would highly recommend checking out this series if you are looking for a longer graphic novel series.

Rating: 4 out of 5.
