Graphic Novel Review: Onion Skin by Edgar Camacho

Synopsis:

Rolando’s job was crushing him… and then it literally crushed his hand. Now he can barely get out of the house, binging TV and struggling to find meaning. On a rare night out with friends, he meets Nera, a woman who lives only in the moment. Dazzled by her hedonistic attitude, Rolando sees a new life opening before him.

Together, these restless youths fix up an old food truck and hit the road for a wild journey. But have they truly found the spice of life? Or has Rolando bitten off more than he can chew?

Review:

I’m not really sure where to start with my review for Onion Skin. I had no expectations going into it and I feel like I have no real opinions after finishing it. What was promised as a “romantic and thrilling tale, stuffed with adventure and delicious food” was unfortunately very underwhelming. There wasn’t any romance and the two main characters were more than dull. Rolando was slightly more complex with the whole breaking his own hand because his job was getting boring. But even that wasn’t enough to make me like him, I just felt pity really.

I’m not sure if the context of the story got lost in translation or something, but I’m not entirely sure what happened in the entire graphic novel. The story was a bit all over the place and there was hardly a difference between the flashbacks and present day, which got a little confusing. The only indicator of the past was Rolando’s broken hand.

One part I did like was the art style. The character designs aren’t my favourite, but the settings and especially the food illustrations were great. They had a lot of character and were definitely the best part of Onion Skin.

Even after writing this review I’m still not sure what to rate Onion Skin. There were a few elements I enjoyed but overall it was an underwhelming experience.

Rating: 1.5 out of 5.
