Graphic Novel Review: Unfamiliar, Vol. 1 by Haley Newsome

Synopsis:

Meet Planchette.

A lonely young kitchen witch, she has high hopes for her new home, a place where she can finally be herself and maybe even make friends. Unfortunately, she discovers that her perfect house is haunted . . . really haunted. Ghosts live in the paintings, they crawl on the ceiling, and they pour out of the faucets! While Planchette can whip up a perfect pizza potion, getting these supernatural guests to leave is more than her magic can handle. To get out of her paranormal predicament, Planchette befriends a cursed girl, an introverted siren, and the worst witch in town. Together, they struggle to put these spirits to rest and find their own sense of belonging.

Review:

Unfamiliar has been on my radar for quite some time now and Iโ€™m happy Iโ€™ve finally picked it up. This was completely adorable from start to finish. I always find graphic novels created by just one person extremely impressive, especially ones that started out on Tapas or Webtoon.

The art style and colour palette are gorgeous. Thereโ€™s something really cosy about it, which is something I find myself saying a lot about witchy graphic novels. Cute and spooky is one of the best art styles and the character designs are so fun and interesting. I loved the end section that showed the evolution of Planchetteโ€™s design. Her final design is definitely the best of the bunch. All of the character designs were great. Showing their wants and emotions through their eyes was a nice touch. Made for some really interesting visuals.

Thereโ€™s not a lot going on story-wise just yet but the beautiful visuals more than make up for it. The exorcism storyline does get going near the end of the volume and Iโ€™m really interested to see where it will go. Iโ€™m also really invested in the friendship between Babs and Sun. I love a good opposites attract.

Iโ€™m a bit obsessed with the fact that Planchette is a food witch. She doesnโ€™t seem to think this is a real form of magic but it sounds like the best type if you ask me. Iโ€™m also intrigued to see how and when Pinyonโ€™s magic will manifest.

I will definitely be checking out volume two of Unfamiliar in the near future. The art style is so fun and I really like the whole cast of characters, even the ghosts.

Rating: 4 out of 5.
