Audiobook Review: The Revelry by Katherine Webber

Synopsis:

The Revelry is a story of best friends, bad luck and the consequences of breaking the rules in a town built on secrets and superstitions.

Growing up in Ember Grove, Bitsy Clark knows better than to break the rules around the Revelry, the mysterious end-of-year party in the woods. So when her best friend, Amy, persuades her to sneak in, Bitsy is full of misgivings.

Misgivings that she should have listened to, because it’s after the Revelry that Bitsy’s luck turns and her life starts to unravel. For Amy, it’s the opposite, as if she’s been blessed with good fortune.

Soon Bitsy is convinced that the Revelry has tied the two friends together in a curse that only she can break….

Review:

I finished The Revelry almost two weeks ago now and have been putting off writing this review because I honestly donโ€™t know what I thought of it. It only took me a couple of sittings to listen to the whole book but these were a lot more spread out than my Goodreads makes it look.

I enjoyed the opening of the book, the mystery and tension surrounding The Revelry was great. But the further I got in, the less I liked all of the characters. At first, I could understand Bitsyโ€™s frustration with Amy but she spirals very quickly and becomes unlikable.

Unfortunately the mystery of The Revelry is completely overshadowed by the downfall of Bitsy and Amyโ€™s friendship. The Revelry played a big part in that and Bitsyโ€™s need for answers is what drives Amy away but there was obviously something weird happening with The Revelry that you donโ€™t get a satisfying answer to really.

You do get some answers but by that time I was a little checked out with the story so I didnโ€™t really care what was happening. Plus nothing happened for about 90% of this book and then all of a sudden the resolution comes round and itโ€™s over.

Also, can we please stop having people narrate the dialogue in a different accent to the descriptions. Itโ€™s so confusing. The narration was actually pretty well done but the switching accents annoys me way more than it should.

Rating: 2 out of 5.
