Synopsis:
The band of adventurers known as Vox Machina will save the world. Eventually. But even they have to start somewhere.
Six would-be heroes on seemingly different jobs find their paths intertwined as they investigate shady business in the swamp town of Stilben. They’ll need to put their heads– and weapons–together to figure out what’s going on…and keep from being killed in the process. Even then, whether or not they can overcome what truly lurks at the bottom of the town’s travails remains to be seen!
Review:
My love for Critical Role seems to grow daily and Iโm excited to finally be taking the plunge into their written works. I only have a few of the graphic novels so far, but I am planning to get the entire collection in the future.
Firstly, I want to talk about the cover art for Vox Machina Origins volume one. Outside of the animated series, this is my favourite depiction of Vox Machina I have seen so far. Theyโve captured the personalities of each character so well. I just wish this was the style throughout the whole novel – I understand that itโs too detailed for this.
Saying this, the art inside is also really nice. I do wish theyโd made Vex and Vax a little more distinguishable from each other. Yes, they are twins and yes, itโs a running joke that everyone gets them mixed up, but they felt too similar if that makes sense?
The scenes where this graphic novel really came to life were when the whole group joined together. Their dysfunctional fighting style just works for them somehow and the little snips and banter are so good.
Getting to learn more about the origin of the characters is an absolute treat and it really makes you understand why they act the way they do. The story flowed well and I think you could pick this up without knowing anything about Vox Machina and still be able to understand what is happening.
Iโm excited to check out Vox Machina Origins volume two in the near future and hopefully read one of the novels.
