I’ve been looking for a chance to post more gaming content, so I thought why not start a series where I can talk about my favourite games? It also gives me an excuse to try out more games.
Bioshock Infinite
Synopsis: “The year is 1912, deep in debt, ex-Pinkerton agent Booker DeWitt is sent to the mysterious flying city of Columbia to find and retrieve a young woman imprisoned in a tower since birth – Elizabeth and to “Bring us the girl and wipe away the debt”. However, almost as soon as Booker arrives, he finds that Columbia and its people are not quite what they seem, and all too soon science, religion, morality, family and life all clash and spiral down into utter chaos, with Booker and Elizabeth as unlikely partners in the midst of all the action.”
This has been my favourite game for the longest time. The very first time I experienced it wasn’t even by playing it myself. I watched Syndicate play the entire game in one sitting–which is funny to think about now because he doesn’t do gaming content anymore. This was years before I played it myself and I didn’t remember everything, meaning my first playthrough was like experiencing it for the first time–something I wish I could do again.
My absolute favourite part of Bioshock Infinite is the art style. I’m a huge fan of steampunk vintage kind of styles and this game nails it. I wouldn’t say it’s full steampunk but it does have elements of it.
Every setting in Colombia is stunning. I could understand why some people wouldn’t think so because it is very “cartoony” and hyperrealistic graphics are the goal these days. But I’m the type of person that does love hyperrealistic but I do also like games to look like games–if that makes sense?
The voice acting is also incredible. Troy Baker, who voiced Booker, is one of my favourite voice actors of all time. You’ll most likely know him as Joel from The Last of Us (expect a post on this in the future). I don’t know who voices Elizabeth, and I don’t think I’ve ever played anything else she’s acted in, but she’s so good in Bioshock Infinite.
I can’t comment on the story too much without giving major spoilers, but the storyline is incredibly smart. I’ll admit that I didn’t fully understand the plot the first time I played the game, but once you take time to piece everything together, it blows your mind. Especially when you get to Rapture at the end.
I also love the Burial at Sea DLC, which I didn’t realise until last year came with my version of the game. It takes place in Rapture, where the original games take place, and you get to play as Elizabeth. Which is so interesting and gives you a different perspective on the world.
If you’ve never checked out any of the Bioshock games and you enjoy story-driven first-person shooters, you absolutely should. All three games are great.
