The Best Of: Comfort Films and TV Shows #10

Gilmore Girls

I’ve only watched the entirety of this series once through, but the comfort I get from it is immense. There’s something about films, shows and books set in small towns that really get me. I love how everyone knows each other and that they have special seasonal events. I actually do live in a smaller neighbourhood now, but the UK just doesn’t do stuff like that – at least not that I know of.

I’m currently on my second watch of the series and I’m halfway through season three. My second watch is taking a lot longer than my first as I’m not really bingeing it this time. I also keep forgetting how comforting I actually find this show. I’ll go months without watching it and then get through six episodes in one day. The way it makes me feel instantly calm should be studied. Well, I feel like that right now. I won’t be like that once Rory gets to Yale, that’s when it goes a bit down hill for me.

Don’t get me wrong, I still love the later seasons and I’m not anti Logan, but I hate who Rory becomes at Yale. She was always self absorbed but they completely assassinated her character when she sleeps with a married man, who also happens to be the worst of all of her boyfriends. Even on my first watch I lost all respect for her after that. She never deserved Jess and I’m glad they don’t end up together.

Anyway, Rory rant out of the way. I love the side characters so much. Kirk is an obvious favourite but Lane is the real star of the show. They did her character so dirty in the end though. Justice for Lane, she deserved better.

Gilmore Girls has become a ‘put it on in the background’ show, which is a true testament to how much of a comfort watch it is. I particularly love the episodes that focus on town traditions or seasonal events, they’re the most comforting.

Synopsis: The show follows their daily life as Lorelai advances in her career as a hotel manager and Rory deals with the pressures of high school. Lorelai, currently working at the Independence Inn in Stars Hollow, needs help from her parents to pay Rory’s tuition to Chilton, a prestigious high school.
