Heartstopper
This is one of the newest additions to this list, but how could I not? Heartstopper in all its forms well and truly has my heart and I’m not mad about it. This show brings me pure joy and comfort. Which is very obvious if you’ve been reading Young Creative Press for a while.
It might be embarrassing to say but I’ve watched season one five times. If I’m feeling down I know it will cheer me up. There’s something so magical about the whole show that makes me feel so happy and seen. It made me realise and accept parts of myself I never would have thought about before – something I know it has done for a lot of people. Nick Nelson is very special to me and he always will be.
At the time of writing this post I’ve only watched season three once, which I did in one night, but I’ll definitely watch it again some point soon. The change in maturity for season three felt like the right move to make, especially with the focus on Charlie’s mental health. I think this was depicted with grace, sensitivity and beauty. It also gave us some of the best acting of the entire show. Joe and Kit really are Nick and Charlie, we couldn’t have asked for better actors for the roles.
As season three covered content from volume four and five, I’m now worried we won’t be getting another season of this for a very long time. Alice Oseman is working on volume six right now though so hopefully they work on a (final?) season of the show. I’d love to have a season based on Solitaire as Tori is one of my favourite characters, but we’ve already passed that point in the timeline unfortunately.
There is a chance that we’d get at least some episodes based on the Nick and Charlie novella as I imagine volume six will end around that time. Weirdly, my review of Nick and Charlie is my most viewed post of all time.
I love that the episodes are fairly short because it means I can rewatch the entire show over just one weekend whenever I want. My boyfriend hasn’t seen season three yet so I need to get him to watch it soon.
This was the first series I did re-watch reviews of and the format of those posts has changed a lot since then. I wish I had waited to post them as I did finally figure out a solid structure, but check them out here if you want. They were fun to write, but extremely time consuming.
Synopsis: Heartstopper is a British coming-of-age romance streaming television series developed for Netflix based on the webcomic and graphic novel of the same name by Alice Oseman. Starring Kit Connor and Joe Locke, it tells the story of Charlie Spring, a gay schoolboy who falls in love with someone he sits next to in his new form, Nick Nelson, while also exploring the lives of Charlie and Nick’s friends: Tao, Elle, Tara, Darcy and Isaac.
