Add this to the list of post series I forget exists. I haven’t written one of these since June and I actually have quite a few films and shows I want to talk about so I better get posting these more frequently. This probably won’t become a monthly series, unless I have more to talk about than I thought, but I definitely won’t leave it for four months again.
Superstore
I’ve just finished my rewatch of Superstore and I still think it’s highly underrated. It’s one of the best sitcoms and it has one of the best friends to lovers storylines. If you were around when I did my re-watch reviews, you will know just how much I love Amy and Jonah. From episode one their chemistry is insane and it just keeps getting stronger with each season. The casting director knew what they were doing when they hired America Ferrera and Ben Feldman.
The fact that their ‘will they, won’t they’ lasts for literal seasons, despite the glaringly obvious romantic chemistry is almost painful but the pay off is more than worth it. Well, for a while anyway. The final season does worry you for a while but the last episode is so special.
I’m also a big fan of Dina and Garett as a couple. They’re not only ‘friends to lovers’ but also a classic case of opposites attract. They couldn’t be more different, especially with their attitude towards work, but somehow they make a great couple. It was one of the more unexpected pairings in the show but I’m glad it happened, they don’t necessarily bring out the best in each other but they are really funny.
Synopsis: A group of employees working at Cloud 9, a big-box store in St Louis, Missouri, faces several challenges while dealing with customers and at the same time attending to their personal requirements.
Made of Honor
It’s probably a little strange I’m including this film in this post as I actually don’t like the female love interest in Made of Honor very much. No hate for the actor, it’s the character I have issues with. However, I love Patrick Dempsey’s character and the friends to lovers trope is actually done well. I love that they’ve been friends for such a long time, which is a factor that makes this trope even better in my opinion. If they’d been friends since childhood that would be the icing on the cake. Also the fact that (spoiler alert) she almost gets married to someone else, but he stops the wedding, is just *chef’s kiss*. The whole montage of him getting to the wedding is so funny.
You don’t get to see them as a couple for very long but the build up, including the antics along the way, are hilarious. The setting is also great. Only half of the film takes place in the Scottish Highlands but those are the most memorable parts. It really makes you appreciate how beautiful Scotland is and it makes the film feel so cosy.
This is definitely one of the more underrated friends to lovers films, so if you haven’t seen it, I definitely recommend it.
Synopsis: Hannah surprises Tom, her best friend who is secretly in love with her, with the news of her engagement to a wealthy man. Things take a complicated turn when she asks Tom to be her maid of honour.
