I can’t believe this is a post series I’ve never thought of doing until now. I’m not one to give out five stars to graphic novels very often, but I do have quite a few I want to talk about. This will also push me to read the many graphic novels I currently have on my to be read.
Critical Role: The Mighty Nein Origins: Jester Lavorre by Sam Maggs & Hunter Severn Bonyun

This was the first instalment I read in this series and it’s still my favourite. I do think these graphic novels are pretty light on story, but if you’re a big Critical Role/The Mighty Nein fan, you’ll love them. The art style of this one in particular is why it’s a five star read. It’s so vibrant and full of character, much like Jester herself. Shout out to Hunter Severn Bonyun and Cathy Le for the incredible art and colours – this is genuinely one of my top graphic novels for art style.
Synopsis: Jester Lavorre had an unconventional upbringing, even for one born in cosmopolitan Nicodranas. Daughter of the famed Ruby of the Sea, she had many opportunities for mischief as a small child, of which she took full advantage! Dive into the mystery of Jester’s early years, her first meeting with the Traveler, and the fateful events that set her on a path to eventually join the Mighty Nein.
Heartstopper: Volume Two by Alice Oseman

If you’re wondering where volume one is, I mentioned it in my ‘books I’ve rated five stars’ series a while ago – well before I thought about doing a series just for graphic novels.
I always think volume two is my least favourite, but after I did my third re-read in 2024, I realised just how much I love it. It’s always been a five star read for me but I would have placed it at the bottom in my rankings. I don’t think I actually have a least favourite in this series. I just love it so much.
The growing relationship between Nick and Charlie is what makes this volume so special. It’s just pure sweetness and reminds me of being a teenager and the tentativeness of your first relationship. Plus who doesn’t love the beach scenes? In both the graphic novel and the show they are extremely cute.
Synopsis: Nick and Charlie are best friends. Nick knows Charlie’s gay, and Charlie is sure that Nick isn’t.
But love works in surprising ways, and Nick is discovering all kinds of things about his friends, his family … and himself.
