The Best Of: Must Read Fantasies #2

Fantasy has been my favourite genre ever since I was a kid and while it is still one of my favourites, I’ve been reading less and less of it in the last few years. I’m hoping this post series will reignite my love for it.

Starcrossed by Josephine Angelini

I’ve been talking about this series a lot lately and it’s reminding me that I need to continue my reread. This was a staple series for me as a teen and it does still hold up for me as a 25 year old.

It’s inspired by Greek mythology and takes a twist on those stories that is completely unique. At least, I’ve never seen another book do anything similar.

Synopsis: How do you defy DESTINY?

Helen Hamilton has spent her entire sixteen years trying to hide how different she is – no easy task on an island as small and sheltered as Nantucket. And it’s getting harder. Nightmares of a desperate desert journey have Helen waking parched, only to find her sheets damaged by dirt and dust. At school she’s haunted by hallucinations of three women weeping tears of blood… and when Helen first crosses paths with Lucas Delos, she has no way of knowing they’re destined to play the leading roles in a tragedy the Fates insist on repeating throughout history.

As Helen unlocks the secrets of her ancestry, she realizes that some myths are more than just legend. But even demigod powers might not be enough to defy the forces that are both drawing her and Lucas together – and trying to tear them apart.

Fallen by Lauren Kate

I was obsessed with this series as a young teen and while it might not be the greatest, it feels like a rite of passage. I’d definitely be up for doing a re-read of the first book to see if it’s as good as I remember. I was about 13 when I read it though, so that was a very long time ago.

I don’t want to give too much away as the ‘fantasy’ element of this series is not mentioned in the synopsis and I can’t remember if it’s in the first book.

Synopsis: There’s something achingly familiar about Daniel Grigori.

Mysterious and aloof, he captures Luce Price’s attention from the moment she sees him on her first day at the Sword & Cross boarding school in sultry Savannah, Georgia. He’s the one bright spot in a place where cell phones are forbidden, the other students are all screw-ups, and security cameras watch every move.

Even though Daniel wants nothing to do with Luce—and goes out of his way to make that very clear—she can’t let it go. Drawn to him like a moth to a flame, she has to find out what Daniel is so desperate to keep secret… even if it kills her.
