I’ve been having such a good time reading thrillers lately and it’s honestly become my favourite genre. I haven’t picked up a fantasy book in quite some time which is hard to believe considering it’s been my favourite genre for pretty much my whole life.
Thrillers have really taken over my life and I’ve read some pretty great ones recently. I also have a ton on my to be read to check out.
A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder by Holly Jackson
I’m still not over this book and I read it almost a year ago. I also want to re-read it already which is a little crazy when you think about it. I’d usually say thrillers and mysteries don’t have a lot of re-read value because you already know what happens, but there’s something magic in this series. It has very quickly made its way into my top five series of all time.
If you haven’t read this series yet, you absolutely need to. It’s the best series I read in 2023 and I can’t recommend it enough. There’s also a show coming out soon(ish) so that’s extra exciting.
Synopsis: The case is closed. Five years ago, schoolgirl Andie Bell was murdered by Sal Singh. The police know he did it. Everyone in town knows he did it.
But having grown up in the same small town that was consumed by the murder, Pippa Fitz-Amobi isn’t so sure. When she chooses the case as the topic for her final year project, she starts to uncover secrets that someone in town desperately wants to stay hidden. And if the real killer is still out there, how far will they go to keep Pip from the truth?
All the Dead Lie Down by Kyrie McCauley
This was another 2023 read and I really enjoyed it. I loved the series Bly Manor on Netflix and All the Dead Lie Down promised similar vibes and delivered. It also gets extra points for being sapphic.
It’s premise is nothing unique, but it’s an excellent thriller. You feel on edge from the very beginning and as the secret unfold there’s a real chilly atomosphere to the manor. I love a good thriller set in an old manor.
Synopsis: The Sleeping House was very much awake . . .
Days after a tragedy leaves Marin Blythe alone in the world, she receives a surprising invitation from Alice Lovelace—an acclaimed horror writer and childhood friend of Marin’s mother. Alice offers her a nanny position at Lovelace House, the family’s coastal Maine estate.
Marin accepts and soon finds herself minding Alice’s peculiar girls. Thea buries her dolls one by one, hosting a series of funerals, while Wren does everything in her power to drive Marin away. Then Alice’s eldest daughter returns home unexpectedly. Evie Hallowell is every bit as strange as her younger sisters, and yet Marin is quickly drawn in by Evie’s compelling behavior and ethereal grace.
But as Marin settles in, she can’t escape the anxiety that follows her like a shadow. Dead birds appear in Marin’s room. The children’s pranks escalate. Something dangerous lurks in the woods, leaving mutilated animals in its wake. All is not well at Lovelace House, and Marin must unravel its secrets before they consume her.
