The Best Of: Unforgettable Thrillers & Mysteries #2

The Dark Place by Britney S. Lewis

This is definitely a thriller but I wouldn’t say it’s a particularly scary one. Probably because it’s a YA release. It does have a ton of suspense and tension though. The cover is stunning though and the inside is also very cool – without giving too much away, there are moments spent “elsewhere” and these are on black pages. I received a review copy so I’m not sure if this is how it was published, but I loved that touch.

I really enjoyed this book, it was a pretty quick read and I didn’t want to put it down. However, it is fairly unsatisfying. I’m assuming it will be a series as the ‘time travel’ part of it isn’t fully explored. I’d still recommend it though.

ARC Review: The Dark Place by Britney S. Lewis

Synopsis: You can only hide from your nightmares for so long.

Seventeen-year-old Hylee Williams didn’t ask to disappear. But she did disappear, and not only that, but when she vanished from our world, she materialised in a dark, twisted version of the night that changed her life forever: the night her older brother went missing.

Just as Hylee realizes this moment could be the key to unraveling the truth about her brother, she’s yanked away from the dark place back to our world. Craving a sense of normalcy, she goes to a party with her best friend–where she meets Eilam Roads. Tall, handsome, and undeniably, inexplicably familiar, Hylee can’t help the pull she feels towards him. It’s a classic teen girl-meets-boy situation, until it happens again. She disappears, right in front of him.

Together, Hylee and Eilam investigate the truth about time, space, and reality, with Hylee increasingly convinced her time travel holds the key to saving her brother. But the more they learn, the more Hylee begins to see darkness lurking in her world–and in herself.

You’re Not Supposed to Die Tonight by Kalynn Bayron

This is a great short read. It’s less than 300 pages but still packs a punch. If you’re a fan of the summer camp horror trope, this book is for you. I didn’t realise this is a setting I enjoy but apparently I really do. There’s something about being in a setting you can’t easily leave that makes the horror so much more terrifying.

The ending of You’re Not Supposed to Die Tonight is genuinely shocking. I like to think I’m really good at guessing twists and endings, but this one got me. I’m always up for a Kalynn Bayron book, you can never guess how they’ll end.
