Synopsis:

Maggie Patel has landed her dream job at The New York Spectator; or, it would be, if she could get a decent story assignment. When a career-making interview finally lands on her desk, it’s with the last person she’d ever want to see again – Edward, the crown prince of Bairmorne…and her long-ago friend.

When Maggie was a child, her mother worked as a housemaid at the Royal Palace of Bairmorne, a small European nation, until they were unceremoniously kicked to the curb…amidst a cloud of whispered controversy and palace intrigue. Now, Prince Edward and Maggie are all grown up, and they both have jobs to do – but there’s a spark between them they can’t deny. Will that spark lead to something more, and can their attraction withstand public scrutiny, royal duty, and secrets from the past?

Review: 

I decided to listen to The Royal Assignment as I thought it would be a quick and fun read to bump up my Goodreads challenge. I’m now regretting wasting hours of my life on this, thank god I was doing other important tasks at the same time otherwise I would have been very disappointed with myself.

The first indicator that this was going to be awful should have been the fact that it took three authors to write. Baring in mind that there was absolutely no descriptions or world-building, just pure dialogue. 

I’m usually a big fan of multiple narrators with ambient sound clips but it really didn’t work here. This story had little to no narrative and honestly, the characters were annoying as hell. The voice actors seemed to have done a good job but everything felt a little too overacted. Probably not their fault more that the script sucked.

The music between each “scene” got annoying very fast and it really slowed down the story. Also as someone who doesn’t listen at the original speed, it was all distorted and really didn’t sound good.  

I didn’t like a single character. Like at all. Everyone was constantly giving Maggie overly sexual compliments and it was weird as hell. It sounded like she was an absolute goddess, shame she had the personality of soggy cardboard. Well her and every other character in this ‘story’. 

Honestly, I wouldn’t recommend The Royal Assignment even though it’s available with an Audible subscription. Spend your time listening to something with actual substance. Sorry to be harsh but this was honestly one of the worse ‘stories’ I have ever read.
