House of Hollow by Krystal Sutherland
I won’t lie, the cover is what made me buy this book. I think I remember seeing it on NetGalley a while ago but I never requested it. Hopefully buying this because of the cover won’t come back to bite me. That’s happened so many times now you’d think I’d learn to not do that, but here we go again.
Synopsis: Seventeen-year-old Iris Hollow has always been strange. Something happened to her and her two older sisters when they were children, something they can’t quite remember but that left each of them with an identical half-moon scar at the base of their throats.
Iris has spent most of her teenage years trying to avoid the weirdness that sticks to her like tar. But when her eldest sister, Grey, goes missing under suspicious circumstances, Iris learns just how weird her life can get: horned men start shadowing her, a corpse falls out of her sister’s ceiling, and ugly, impossible memories start to twist their way to the forefront of her mind.
As Iris retraces Grey’s last known footsteps and follows the increasingly bizarre trail of breadcrumbs she left behind, it becomes apparent that the only way to save her sister is to decipher the mystery of what happened to them as children.
The closer Iris gets to the truth, the closer she comes to understanding that the answer is dark and dangerous – and that Grey has been keeping a terrible secret from her for years.
Hunt on Dark Waters by Katee Robert
Again, the cover is what caught my eye with this book, but the synopsis is why I decided to buy it. I’ve been quite into vampire books recently, I feel like I missed that hype the first time round, so I’m getting into them now.
I also got the second book in this series, which I believe are standalones, so I’m hoping this will be great. I love a romantasy.
Synopsis: Evelyn is a witch with a perfect storm of impulses: terrible taste in bed partners, sticky fingers, and a lust for danger. After she steals from her vampire ex and falls through a portal to another realm, she’s fished out of the waters by a band of seafarers and their telekinetic captain. She’s immediately given a choice—join their group or die.
Bowen has no memory of his life before he became one of the Cŵn Annwn. He and his pirate crew are bound by vow to patrol through Threshold, the magical sea in between realms, keeping the portals to other worlds safe. When he rescues Evelyn, he doesn’t expect to be attracted to the unflappably brassy pickpocket. The longer he spends in her presence, the more he begins to question if his heart is the next thing she’ll steal.
But as tension heats up between Bowen and Evelyn, danger escalates as well. Because Evelyn has no intention of keeping her vows to the Cŵn Annwn, and if she betrays the crew, both she and Bowen will pay the ultimate price….
Daughter of the Siren Queen by Tricia Levenseller
I loved the first book in this series so I was so excited when this popped up for 99p. It’s not very likely I’ll get around to this any time soon, but it’s good to know I have it. I can’t wait to find out what happens next to Alosa and Riden.
Synopsis: Alosa’s mission is finally complete. Not only has she recovered all three pieces of the map to a legendary hidden treasure, but the pirates who originally took her captive are now prisoners on her ship. Still unfairly attractive and unexpectedly loyal, first mate Riden is a constant distraction, but now he’s under her orders. And she takes great comfort in knowing that the villainous Vordan will soon be facing her father’s justice.
When Vordan exposes a secret her father has kept for years, Alosa and her crew find themselves in a deadly race with the feared Pirate King. Despite the danger, Alosa knows they will recover the treasure first . . . after all, she is the daughter of the Siren Queen.
Phantom Hearts by Rosie Talbot & Sarah Maxwell
This was described as A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder meets Heartstopper and they really didn’t need to say more. I bought this instantly. I feel like it’s quite rare for graphic novels to go on sale so cheap and this was less than £2. Fingers crossed it delivers on its promises.
Synopsis: Sixteen-year-old Malia is popular, pretty and smart, but underneath her carefully crafted façade she’s struggling with anxiety. When a school bus crashes killing some of her fellow students, Malia is thrown into a further emotional spiral as she remembers the students; rebel and dropout Shepherd; volatile track star Russ; and brainy Emil. When Malia meets Keezy, the cute daughter of the local mechanic, the two begin to question the motive for the crash.
As Malia and Keezy start to uncover secrets, Malia starts to see ghosts wherever she goes. How will Malia find time to flirt with Keezy when pursued by restless spirits … what don’t the dead classmates want her to discover? And will Malia ever find the courage to tell Keezy how she feels?
