Book Review: A Tournament of Crowns by Elise Kova

Synopsis:

A Tournament of Crowns is book three in the A Trial of Sorcerers series.

Last night, Eira killed a man.

However justified her actions were, many now regard her as a cold-blooded murderer and a heretic who extinguished their hope. But there’s no time to explain herself. She barely has a chance to wash the blood off her hands before the Tournament of Five Kingdoms begins.

Sequestered with the other champions for the duration of the tournament, Eira must now navigate the games, her competition, the enemies who hunt her head, and — somehow worse than all the rest — being stuck in close quarters with the man who broke her heart.

All is fair in love and magical tournaments, and Eira is ready for the fight of her life.

Get ready for twists you never saw coming in A Tournament of Crowns. This series is perfect for readers who enjoy young adult, epic fantasy full of elemental magic, slow-burn romance, found family, and battles for the futures of kingdoms set in a world you’ll never want to leave.

Review:

I received ARCs of the first two books in this series, but I sadly missed the opportunity for A Tournament of Crowns. Which is why it has taken me so long to read it. I am happy, however, because it was not only my first read of the year, but also my first five-star read of the year. Hopefully, this means good things for 2024’s reads.

One thing I can very safely say about this series is that it seems to get better and better. Which is slightly a lie as the first book is favourite, but that’s because of meeting the new characters and I did prefer the trials to the tournament. The main plot is really starting to progress now and that ending, oh my god. I’m not going to spoil anything, obviously, but it’s a nail-biter.

This brings me to my next point, the tournament wasn’t as exciting as I thought it would be as Eira snuck off for most of it so you don’t really know what happens. Surprisingly, it’s more of a subplot, despite being in the title of the book. The parts of the tournament that you did witness first-hand were very exciting. I loved that each member of the team had their time to shine, especially Alyss.

I usually spend a good while in these reviews gushing over Cullen and this one is no different. It was a little touch and go with him for a while but my god are Eira and Cullen breaking my heart. I’ve been rooting for them since the first book and it hurts me to see them in pain. My absolute favourite quote in the entire book is Cullen saying to Eira “If you want me to pursue my happiness, then know I am pursuing you”. Nope, it’s too much. I just want them to be happy.

In my review of the second book, I talked about Eira’s development and how much she matured. Well, while she’s still pretty reckless, she does rely on her friends now. The Solaris sorcerers are finally operating as a real team and I love their dynamic. Especially Eira and Noelle. I never thought she’d become one of my favourite characters, but I love her.

I am once again, going to impatiently away the next instalment, which I’ve said for each book so far. Thankfully, I only need to wait just over a month and I cannot wait. I need to know what happens, so badly I’m going to put down whatever I am reading to read An Heir of Frost straightaway.

Rating: 5 out of 5.
