Book Review: Good Girls Die First by Kathryn Foxfield

Synopsis:

Mind games. Murder. Mayhem. How far would you go to survive the night?

Blackmail lures sixteen-year-old Ava to the derelict carnival on Portgrave Pier. She is one of ten teenagers, all with secrets they intend to protect whatever the cost. When fog and magic swallow the pier, the group find themselves cut off from the real world and from their morals. As the teenagers turn on each other, Ava will have to face up to the secret that brought her to the pier and decide how far she’s willing to go to survive.

Review:

I thought Iโ€™d enjoy Good Girls Die First more than I did. I was excited for a shorter read, but I think Kindle lied about the length of this book. It was definitely longer than 250 pages and it seemed to drag on for quite a while. The actual concept was super interesting but it got quite repetitive after a while and the paranormal part was just plain irritating. There will definitely be spoilers in this review so read at your own discretion.

Iโ€™m usually a big fan of paranormal books but having the โ€˜big badโ€™ actually be present and tangible was a big mistake. This would have been way creepier if the characters turned on each and you didnโ€™t know why. It made the story way too predictable and having them speak to the evil spirit, who is very creatively *sarcasm* called Whispers, not just hearing it in their heads really ruined the vibe. Whispers was extremely annoying and it seemed like it would have been fairly easy to not give into his game.

There were way too many characters which is what made Good Girls Die First so repetitive. Each character went through the same pattern and the constant turning to night and having everyone forget what happened got old really quick. The first time it happened I was on the edge of my seat but it happens like six times and I really think having it happen over just one night would have made the pacing much better and the deaths of the characters would have had more of an impact.

There were quite a few grammar and spelling mistakes throughout this book. I donโ€™t usually comment on this if the book is an ARC but I read the officially published version so I do find this to be a flaw. Am I being too harsh? Maybe.

Before writing this review I thought I enjoyed Good Girls Die First but apparently I really didnโ€™t. Iโ€™m not sure if Iโ€™d check out other books by this author after reading this one. It was an interesting concept though, so never say never.

Rating: 1 out of 5.
