The Best Of: Books I’ve Rated Five Stars #3

Five star reads seem to be getting few and far between lately and that’s a little sad. So to make myself feel better I’m to talk about more of my previous five star reads.

Serpent & Dove by Shelby Mahurin

This was my first read of 2022 and I absolutely loved it, obviously, I rated it five stars. I’d put off reading it quite literally since it was published and thankfully that didn’t get my hopes too high – I’ve been burned by leaving a book too long, hyping it up and then not liking it.

I haven’t read many marriage of convenience books but this one is definitely my favourite. A witch and a witch hunter, yes please!

This also has a really interesting magic system that reminds you that magic should always come with a price.

Synopsis: Bound as one to love, honour, or burn.

Two years ago, Louise le Blanc fled her coven and took shelter in the city of Cesarine, forsaking all magic and living off whatever she could steal. There, witches like Lou are hunted. They are feared. And they are burned.

Sworn to the Church as a Chasseur, Reid Diggory has lived his life by one principle: thou shalt not suffer a witch to live. His path was never meant to cross with Lou’s, but a wicked stunt forces them into an impossible union—holy matrimony.

The war between witches and Church is an ancient one, and Lou’s most dangerous enemies bring a fate worse than fire. Unable to ignore her growing feelings, yet powerless to change what she is, a choice must be made.

And love makes fools of us all.

Heartstopper: Volume One by Alice Oseman

I’ve read Heartstopper three times now and it never gets old. Every single time it has been a five star read and the cuteness is just too much. It will take something really special to dethrone it as my all-time favourite graphic novel series.

Synopsis: Charlie, a highly-strung, openly gay over-thinker, and Nick, a cheerful, soft-hearted rugby player, meet at a British all-boys grammar school. Friendship blooms quickly, but could there be something more…?

Charlie Spring is in Year 10 at Truham Grammar School for Boys. The past year hasn’t been too great, but at least he’s not being bullied anymore. Nick Nelson is in Year 11 and on the school rugby team. He’s heard a little about Charlie – the kid who was outed last year and bullied for a few months – but he’s never had the opportunity to talk to him.

They quickly become friends, and soon Charlie is falling hard for Nick, even though he doesn’t think he has a chance. But love works in surprising ways, and sometimes good things are waiting just around the corner…
