Book Review: Opposites Attract by Camilla Isley

Synopsis:

First law of magnetism: opposite poles attract.

Single mom Vivian has been burned by love once before, and her job as a divorce lawyer has presented enough evidence to convince her there are no good men left in New York City.

The worst offender is her new neighbour: Dr. Lucas Keller, a coupleโ€™s therapist whose piercing blue eyes and flawless dark hair are just as annoying as his bad temper.

But when Luke starts poaching Vivianโ€™s clients by saving their marriages, she makes it her mission to force him out of the building to save her practice. But itโ€™s Luke who gives her the perfect opportunity when he proposes an unexpected bet.

With their offices at stake, Vivian and Luke play the field of love in a fierce battle of wits that quickly turns hot and personal, especially when Vivianโ€™s daughter gets involved. Now, taking down Luke has become more than business for Vivian. Itโ€™s become a pleasureโ€”and soon, Vivian and Luke will realise how pointless it is to fight the laws of attraction.

Review:

Opposites Attract was my first book by Camilla Isley and it most likely wonโ€™t be my last. I love an office-based enemies-to-lovers romance and this one was really fun. This isnโ€™t really enemies to lovers though as I believe this doesnโ€™t exist in contemporary mediaโ€“unless theyโ€™re literally trying to kill each other, theyโ€™re not enemies, they just dislike each other.

The constant name-calling got a bit old though. Even when they thought of the other person they would use their mean nickname. It felt very childish and after the first instance I was bored of it. I did like their slightly mean flirtatious banter though.

I really wanted to like Vivian but she made it very hard. She jumped to conclusions too quickly and seemed very set in her ways. Despite her daughter begging her for years to know who her dad is, she wouldnโ€™t tell her. It took Tegan having โ€˜therapyโ€™ sessions with Luke (the love interest) for her to finally agree.

The whole reason Luke didnโ€™t like her in the first place was because she literally shoved him out of the way to get on a train. Which made him late to view the office that she then signed the contract for. Obviously, she couldnโ€™t have known that this would happen, but being a decent person really isnโ€™t hard. Itโ€™s easy to understand why Luke doesnโ€™t like her at first.

Annoyingly Luke is the one that has to try and prove himself to her. Really she should have apologised, but heโ€™s the one who puts in all the work.

The other most annoying part of Opposites Attract is if you want to read the epilogue you have to join the authorโ€™s reader group. I get wanting to market it so more people join but that just leaves readers with an abrupt ending that isnโ€™t satisfying.

Ok, thatโ€™s all of the negatives out of the way. Now for the parts that I did like.

The dates set up by the agency were comedy gold. What do you mean Luke went out with a witch, an influencer and a flat earther? Vivianโ€™s were nowhere near as entertaining.

There were a lot of funny moments and the side characters were great. Iโ€™m assuming another book will feature the British magazine editor, I canโ€™t remember his name because I finished the book like a week ago. I may check out more of these in the future.

Opposites Attract was a pretty good read if you can get past how awful one of the main characters is. I really liked Lucas and thought he was the saving grace of the book. There are plenty of funny moments and the plot, although fairly cliche, was entertaining throughout.

Rating: 3 out of 5.
