Book Review: The Do-Over by Lynn Painter

Synopsis:

After living through a dumpster fire of a Valentine’s Day, Emilie Hornby escapes to her grandmother’s house for some comfort and a consolation pint of Ben & Jerry’s. She passes out on the couch, but when she wakes up, she’s back home in her own bed—and it’s Valentine’s Day all over again. And the next day? Another nightmare V-Day.

Emilie is stuck in some sort of time loop nightmare that she can’t wake up from as she re-watches her boyfriend, Josh, cheat on her day after day. In addition to Josh’s recurring infidelity, Emilie can’t get away from the enigmatic Nick, who she keeps running into—sometimes literally—in unfortunate ways.

How many days can one girl passively watch her life go up in flames? And when something good starts to come out of these terrible days, what happens when the universe stops doling out do-overs?

Review:

You can never go wrong with a Lynn Painter book, well not in my opinion anyway. As always she has delivered a fun, funny and heartwarming read.

Thankfully the time loop didn’t get boring, which was a worry of mine. I’m personally not really a fan of time loops, but the one in The Do-Over was pretty fun. Watching Emilie become more confident and actually speaking her mind was great. I don’t agree with some of the things she did but as this is fiction, they were totally warranted.

The quick rundown of multiple Valentine’s days was one of the best parts for me. I loved seeing the different things Emilie tried and how they panned out in quick succession. This is one of the ways the time loop was kept fresh and interesting.

The day when Emilie and Nick skip school is obviously the best one of all. I really loved their dynamic and as I’ve come to expect from a Lynn Painter book, they had great banter. Watching them slowly open up to each other and honestly just have the best day was the loveliest part of this book. Don’t get me started on the typical ‘third act break up’. Completely pointless and while I do understand where Nick was coming from, Emilie did deserve better. You can’t say “I fell in love with you on Valentine’s day, Emilie, but I need more than just seven minutes.” and then completely ignore someone the next day. That’s a little out of line.

I’m not sure what else I can say about The Do-Over without giving some pretty big spoilers. All I will say is. Super cute. Super fun. You will have a lovely time reading this.

Rating: 4 out of 5.
