Critical Role Review: Campaign 4 Episode 5

Campaign synopsis: “Hero to many. Enemy to some. When Thjazi Fang is marked for execution, various figures from across his remarkable life unite to uncover the truth behind his grim fate. In a land still suffering from the fallout of dead gods and living in the shadow of a tumultuous rebellion, these disparate people will come together across the fractured world of Aramán and connect in ways they never imagined.

As hope and victory fade, a question hangs over Aramán. Without the Gods, what great deeds now fall to us? And who, or what, shall grab their crown from themselves?”

Episode synopsis: “Decisions are made about how to keep Occtis safe from his family while the Soldiers embark on a hunt for friend and foe alike…”

Of course Wicander rides side saddle. I love this pathetic man. You just know Sam’s cooking up something real dark about him. He’s going to be the most powerful character in the cast, I’m calling it now.

I’m loving Laura and Travis sitting next to each other. I haven’t watched campaign one so this is the first time I’m seeing this happen. They’re so cute. What’s also cute is the main dice set Laura is using is the same green as Thimble’s wings/outfit.

I’m actually not a fan of Brennan telling the players the DC of the checks. I like the ambiguity of how Matt used to do it. Tell them what they’ve seen/figured out but don’t tell them if it was good or not. It feels more immersive that way. He doesn’t do this all time, so it’s not a huge issue.

The new opening title is cool and I can appreciate the effort that went into making it, but you can’t beat the animated intros. I really hope we get one for this campaign, we have some of the coolest character designs out of all four campaigns so it would be amazing to see them outside of their static portraits.

I’m not overly excited for the schemers today but after campaign three, I do love Marisha and Taliesin as a duo. They had some really lovely moments as Launda and Ashton, so I’m intrigued to see what their dynamic will be in campaign four. I basically zoned out for the entirety of their section so there’s no comments/opinions on it from me. Sorry!

I can’t tell you how much I’m looking forward to some downtime in this campaign. It’s been such a huge lore dump so far. Give me a shopping episode please. I want to see these characters in non-stressful situations. I think that’s why I liked The Mighty Nein so much, they spent a lot of time just doing random stuff and you really got to see their relationships and characters grow.

Wicander asking “Will the horses get lonely” to which Thimble instantly replies with “They’ll get dead” is the best interaction of the entire campaign so far.

The set really looks like a green screen this week, I think it’s the bright lights. Which I feel like they haven’t used much so far as the overture was pretty dark. Literally and story wise.

I’m saying it now, the soldiers table is 100% going to be my favourite. It does have all of my favourite players, so that’s to be expected, but I feel like they’re going to joke around more than the other tables while still pulling off impressive roleplaying/storytelling. Not that the other tables won’t. But the ‘soldiers’ have the most interesting characters to me.

Sam’s drink gags are back and I’m so happy. I was worried for a while that he wasn’t going to do them anymore. FCG’s gas can will always be the funniest one. I’ll never forget the cast’s reaction to seeing it for the first time.

Apologies that this week’s review is a little all over the place – it’s reflecting how busy life is for me at the moment. I haven’t even watched the cooldown yet, but it’s a short one this week so I don’t imagine I’ve missed a lot by not talking about it in this post.
