Graphic Novel ARC Review: Heart & Hustle: Foretold by Heath Amodio

*I was given a copy of Hustle & Heart: Foretold in exchange for an honest review. Thank you to Oni Press and everyone involved in the making of this graphic novel*

Synopsis:

A year after the mysterious death of his wife, Professor Derek Flynn finds himself waking up, as if from a blackout, in the middle of a catastrophic and fatal disaster. Derek has no idea how he got there, but whatโ€™s even more inexplicable is that this has become a common occurrence. In fact, Derek has been lying to his estranged teenage daughter, Casey, about his puzzling disappearances for months. Desperate to get to the bottom of whatโ€™s happening to him, Derek reaches out to psychologist Alice Meyers seeking help to recognize the terrifying visions that haunt his dreams: imminent disasters, both natural and manmade, that Derek now feels he is somehow integral to. But with the FBI catching on to his connection with these disastrous events, a manhunt begins, and Derek finds himself tangled in a perplexing web.

Stuck between being a fugitive and a messiah, and on the run in his pursuit for the truth, Derek will discover that there are no such things as coincidences.

Review:

This ARC has been sat on my to be read for quite some time and I was super excited to finally get around to it. That excitement quickly died when I opened the first page. The artwork on the cover looks nothing like what is inside. Which is very sad as the cover is what made me want to read this. I actually really donโ€™t like the art style (no offence to the artist, this is just my personal preference) it wasnโ€™t anything special and I feel like Iโ€™ve seen it many times before.

Straight away you are thrown into the story, which sometimes is a good thing. This was not one of those times. It caused a lot of confusion for me and it made it difficult for me to concentrate as I had no idea what was going on. Some parts are cleaned up during this volume, but personally, I don’t think it was paced well. A revelation is made but not enough detail is given. I kind of understood what was happening but not why it was happening. Unfortunately, this meant I had no connection to any of the characters, so I didn’t care what happened to any of them.

You learn absolutely nothing about any of these characters. The main character, whose name I canโ€™t remember despite finishing this about 10 minutes ago at the time of writing this review, wakes up in strange places and was present at the time of his wifeโ€™s death. He also has a daughter who is angry, and that is all I know.

I understand that you don’t want to give everything away in the first volume, but what you did give me, hasn’t made me want to continue the series.

Rating: 1 out of 5.
