Graphic Novel Review: Giant Days Vol. 3 by John Allison & Max Sarin

Synopsis:

Best friends Susan, Esther, and Daisy are rounding out their first semester at university. The girls, along with their male hall-mates Ed and McGraw, find that college is more than academics and bad microwavable meals. Add some pub-hopping, hookups, breakups, and political scandal and this might just be the most eventful first semester ever.

Review:

It’s unfortunate to say, but I really don’t think I’ll be continuing with this series. I’m struggling to understand the hype. Personally, I find the story and dialogue to be all over the place. I enjoyed the chaos of it at first but when I can’t even remember what happened in the previous chapter, that’s bad.

One part I was really disappointed about was the lack of development with Daisy’s sexuality. It’s mentioned briefly in the previous volume that she’s exploring and doesn’t really know what her preferences are just yet, but this is basically forgotten about. I did read this in two sittings, a little too far apart for me to remember clearly, so do correct me if I’m wrong. But this feels like a defining plot for the series and instead of getting to learn more about Daisy, you spend yet more time with Susan who is selfish and doesn’t give a second thought to the person she’s in a relationship with.

This whole volume felt like a collection of filler short stories. I really enjoyed the camping chapter as that’s one of the only times you get Esther, Daisy and Susan together. However, as usual, Susan get’s all of the page time, despite camping being Daisy’s thing. The previous volume felt more balanced with how much time we spent with each of the main characters, but this one definitely felt like it was all about Susan. Which is unfortunate as I really didn’t like her in this one.

I really don’t have a lot of positives to talk about for this. I’m still a fan of the art style and I do love that it’s set at a British university, but that’s about it really. There isn’t enough of a plot for me to want to continue.

Rating: 1 out of 5.
