Graphic Novel Review: The Heartstopper Yearbook by Alice Oseman

Synopsis:

The full-colour Heartstopper Yearbook is packed full of exclusive content from the Heartstopper universe – including never-before-seen illustrations, an exclusive mini-comic, a look back at Alice’s Heartstopper artwork over the years, character profiles, trivia, and insights into her creative process – all narrated by a cartoon version of Alice herself.

By the winner of the YA Book Prize, Heartstopper is about love, friendship, loyalty and mental illness. It encompasses all the small stories of Nick and Charlie’s lives that together make up something larger, which speaks to all of us.

Review:

I wasnโ€™t sure if I was going to write a review for The Heartstopper Yearbook as itโ€™s technically non-fiction and Iโ€™ve never reviewed a non-fiction book before. However, it filled me with such happiness and joy I just had to talk about it somewhere.

If you go into The Heartstopper Yearbook expecting it to bring something new to the story youโ€™ve never read before, Iโ€™d change your expectations. This does what it says on the tin. Itโ€™s an artbook with insights into the creative process. Which I personally really enjoyed. Itโ€™s so fun getting to see Alice Osemanโ€™s art develop over the years until it became the iconic Heartstopper style.

It was so interesting that in some of the original drawings of Nick and Charlie they look much older. I wonder if they were originally older than the 14 and 15 year olds we get in volume one? Or is it just because you never see their entire bodies in the graphic novels so you kinda forget how tall they are? Probably a mix of the two.

Also, the mini comics in full colour make me really want the whole series in full colour. Would I be willing to rebuy the entire Heartstopper series just because itโ€™s in colour? The answer is absolutely yes. Alice Oseman take my money. I will buy anything you publish. I own all of her books in both physical and Ebook and I also have the TV tie in edition of Volume One. Iโ€™m saving up to get the whole series in hardback too. Call me crazy, but I only keep physical editions of books I want in my collection and I want those hardbacks.

Aliceโ€™s artwork will always bring me an immense amount of comfort. Thereโ€™s a reason why I read the Heartstopper series so many times. The art sections are my favourite parts of this book. The alternative universe section at the very end was a standout. Regency era Nick and Charlie just hits different.

I have a feeling most people have read this by now, but if you havenโ€™t and youโ€™re a huge Heartstopper fan, itโ€™s worth checking out.

Rating: 5 out of 5.
