Graphic Novel Review: The Mighty Nein Origins – Jester Lavorre by Sam Maggs & Hunter Severn Bonyun

Synopsis:

Jester Lavorre had an unconventional upbringing, even for one born in cosmopolitan Nicodranas. Daughter of the famed Ruby of the Sea, she had many opportunities for mischief as a small child, of which she took full advantage! Dive into the mystery of Jester’s early years, her first meeting with the Traveler, and the fateful events that set her on a path to eventually join the Mighty Nein.

Review:

It’s no secret that Jester Lavorre is one of my favourite characters in the world of Critical Role, so I of course had to start out the The Mighty Nein Origins series with her instalment. I went into this hoping it would be a super fun and cheeky story based on what I already know about Jester. I was not disappointed. I had a great time reading this and baby Jester was so cute.

I’m genuinely in awe of how gorgeous this graphic novel is. Everything about it is stunning: the colours, the style, the layout. I love how vibrant every page was. I’m so tired of fantasy graphic novels that are dark and grey. Why are fantasy writers/illustrators so scared of colour? This graphic novel has so many beautiful colours and the colourist Cathy Le did an incredible job. This might be the most aesthetically pleasing graphic novel I’ve ever read. It took me so long to get through the story because I wanted to take in every single detail on every single page.

I love how simple the story was and while it’s not as detailed or complex as the one you get during the campaign, it’s a fun introduction to the character. Although, I would say based on this first instalment, I don’t think The Mighty Nein Origins series would stand on its own. You definitely need to have prior knowledge of the characters to truly enjoy this. Or if you’re a fan of beautiful art and a fast paced story, but haven’t seen Critical Role’s second campaign, you’d definitely still enjoy this. Just don’t take it too seriously and take it at face value.

Reading this graphic novel has made me even more excited for the show. Hopefully we get a release date soon!

Rating: 5 out of 5.
