Graphic Novel Review: The Mortal Instruments Vol. 2 by Cassandra Clare & Cassandra Jean

Synopsis:

In the world of shadows, battling vampires and fending off wolves at knifepoint no longer frightens Clary. If it means finding her mother, she can deal with that much. But when a trusted ally betrays the Shadowhunters and Jace is nowhere to be found, she might have to face a truth too unsettling to bearโ€ฆ

Review:

Iโ€™ve owned The Mortal Instruments volume two since October and Iโ€™ve finally decided to continue this series. I love that it feels like a direct extension of the written books. Everything feels the same and it makes it so easy to read the story in this compact format. You could probably check this out if you havenโ€™t read the actual books, but I do feel like this volume was far more fast paced (it takes you to the end of the first book).

I read the first instalment on my iPad and Iโ€™m now struggling to remember if it was in colour or not. Either way I love this art style. Cassandra Jean is THE artist for the Shadowhunter Chronicles so there was really no better choice for these graphic novels.

The character designs and expressions were so well done. I loved the little sketches between chapters. My only issue with the art work was that the action scenes were a little hard to follow. Some of the frames were hard to interpret, but otherwise, great work.

As I said in the introduction, the pacing was very quick. I had forgotten where the previous instalment left off and I think if I wasnโ€™t such a huge fan of the books and hadnโ€™t read them multiple times, I would have been so confused.

Otherwise The Mortal Instruments Vol. 2 is another great instalment in this series and Iโ€™m excited to keep reading.

Rating: 4 out of 5.
